Some perspective on the October 9 Pew religious survey stating that 1 in 5 Americans report they have no religious affiliation. Essentially stating that although 1 in 5 may not belong to an organized religion, that doesn't account for all of the Americans that remain spiritual...

Perhaps they should break the non-religious into categories for polling purposes. However, most of these spiritual types insist they don't have a religion. That alone tells us a lot. If 'spiritual but not religious' types don't like being labelled with the non-religious- and really take umbrage with the fact that they are no longer placed in the Christian category because they really are Christians not wanting the burden of the label- I don't see why they should complain as they're being taken at their word. They can't have their cake and eat it too.

On the other hand, Americans particular tend to lie - excuse me, exaggerate - about how often they actually go to church. Clearly, participation in organized religion is still considered important enough if people feel the need to portray themselves more active church-goers than what they are in reality. Why is that?

Another comment on church-hopping. I view it as commercialised church-shopping and as do-it-yourself Christianity. Shopping for the kind of message and spirituality that one personally likes and is willing to pay for, coupled with business rival megastar pastors and spiritual leaders who cater for that growd by telling the growd what the growd wants to hear in order to sell their product, i.e. gain memberships and money from membership fees.
