  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have heard that polemic before. And I'm unpersuaded by it. I'd have to toss out the better part of two centuries of religious hermeneutics... for a foundation that looks firm, but is ultimately even more unstable and shoddy.
Easier to cut apart the Bible than give up a measly two centuries worth of scholarship, I guess. There's nothing shaky about holding to the entire Bible as the word of God.

Good luck with that.

a couple from a local Pentecostal church (Assembly of God) - started to shun me.
Actually we are suppose to do the opposite. WE are to be a witness and a testimony to people. We never know for sure how much of an effect we will have on them.

The net effect that their decision to shun had was to incline me to stay away from their denomination. I have had almost nothing to do with the Assembly of God since.

I attended an Assembly of God once. I remember there were no greeters and only one person talked to me and I wondered a bit about them.

In the RCC it means they are no longer in Communion with the Church and cannot receive Sacraments because of some major rule violation (e.g. attacking the Pope, women being ordained, desecrating the Eucharist etc). They are not "shunned" in the traditional sense. They are welcome back once they repent.
Do you know if they can still attend Mass and receive the graces of saying the Rosary, The Angelus, the Confiteor, the Our Father and so on, without partaking of the Holy Eucharist?

To receive pardon and accept the Sacraments, I think they just have to repent and confess, but can still attend mass. I'm not positive on that.

If one is excommunicated then one cannot receive the sacraments. which effectively means, no communion, no marriage, no Orders ...

Yes, I understand that part, about not receiving the sacrements. My question is whether or not the person can still attend the mass and benefit from all of the graces that flow from it. Whilst still not receiving the Holy Eucharist.

Yes, an excommunicated person can attend mass, they are encouraged to do so.

Thank you. That's really nice to know. I would think making reparations and working on ones walk would be a way to overcome the original reasons for excommunication, as Jesus forgives we must also forgive. It would be merciful indeed.
