This is a very fiercely defended topic regardless of which side you are on. The point of the thread is not to try to prove who is right/wrong. I am well aware that these discussions often devolve into exactly that, a back and forth on who is right and who is wrong, however; please respond to the following two questions before you begin said back and forth.

1. Should individual churches take an official position on the topic of flat vs. spherical Earth? What about the Church as a whole? Why or why not?

2. How would you handle a situation in which this topic began to become divisive and create discord within your local church? Assume you are an elder or leader.
1. Yes. The first Great Commandment. Love God with all your mind. As Augustine pointed out long ago, Christians who talk nonsense are a stumbling block to the Gospel (but something few social media X'ns will read in a meme world)

I'm not convinced that there are many flat Earthers to debate. In 40-something years on this planet, I've yet to meet even one. I would be skeptical of any statistics that portray a flat Earth view as widespread. It seems to me that the so-called flat Earth position is more likely the product of troll farms. Perhaps part of a bigger psy-op of some kind. With the goal of undermining a country's stability or maybe a vain attempt to make God look foolish. To be more charitable, it might just be a practical joke that began on the internet. Done for the lols.

I'm not even sure that a true debate is happening about this subject. It would not create discord in any church that I've ever attended, and I've attended quite a few. From low church to high church. From fundamental Baptist congregations to Roman Catholic services I've somehow never encountered a flat Earth position.

So why did I bother to post in this thread? In the event that somebody who genuinely wants to know more about Jesus stumbles across this forum and wonders if they need to believe in a flat Earth to have a relationship with God, I can answer emphatically. You do not. This topic has nothing to do with God as the Creator, the sinful state of humanity, the empty tomb, the resurrection, or our reconciliation to him. Don't let these odd internet shenanigans get in your way. Read the Gospel. Talk to your Christian friends or a local minister. I pray that the Holy Spirit guides and gives you wisdom and discernment on your journey. May you find the desire of your heart through Jesus. For the rest of your days in this life and in the next.

Yes. Churches should be comfortable affirming a spherical earth. If they can't acknowledge something so basic, then they shouldn't be allowed to host an audience each Sunday.

I would address the topic by informing people that the Bible is not a science textbook:

The church is not there to teach scientific things, as such.

Scripture is grossly misinterpreted by flat earth believers. They wouldnt go along with any church's teaching on the shape of the earth unless it mirrored their own beliefs.
I think that because people interpret the Bible as a scientifically accurate textbook, the church should engage these topics to inform their audience why, for example, 1 Samuel 2:8 states that earth rests on pillars. And similar verses.

Churches should be able to say, "hey, earth doesn't actually rest on pillars".

I'm a Flat Earther, a Creationist who believes that all the gifts of the Spirit are for today (anti-cessationist), looking for the mystical union with Jesus Christ as promised in John 14:20-21 and wanting to be led by the Holy Spirit as promised in 1 Corinthians 2 with the mind of Christ. Judge, not least, we be judged—blessings to all.

When I go Home to be with Jesus He will set me straight as to the earth's shape. When He told me the universe was in me, John 14:20, that was plenty to chew on for a lifetime—many Blessings.

Hellow my Friend.

Are all the suns, moons, and planets then flat?

Peace and Blessings

What do you think?

Does the moon and sun look flat? The planets?

Nope! They are all spheres like the earth.

Ha! My hubby once used that word and I thought he made it up.
Twelve sided. And my proof is that Jerusalem has twelve gates and twelve walls. QED. ;)

Read Genesis 1:6-9:
6 ¶ Again God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.

7 Then God made the firmament, and separated the waters, which were [m]under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament, Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 ¶ God said again, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

We live in a created environment with waters above and below. The firmament is the place of stars (heavenly bodies), planets (wandering stars - Greek translation), and the luminaries sun and moon to give light which was created on the fourth day (after the earth was dry, Genesis 16-17:

16 God then made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made also the stars.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven, to shine upon the earth,

18 And to rule in the day, and in the night, and to separate the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

I don't argue with the Word; I embrace that God the Father's ways are deep and strive to accept that which is and mold myself into His image- Genesis 1:27. Each of us is at the center of His creation, and within us is the capacity to reach the mind of Christ

1 Cor 2:16 "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he might instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ".

Many Blessings.
