Recent rise in COVID-19 cases has been mostly in states Trump won in 2016

As the U.S. emerges from the COVID-19 crisis, Missouri is becoming a cautionary tale for the rest of the country: It is seeing an alarming rise in cases because of a combination of the fast-spreading delta variant and stubborn resistance among many people to getting vaccinated.

The people in these states are very lucky for now. The current variants don't effect the effectiveness of the current vaccines much. So, the people have a ready answer to any surge in cases: get vaccinated.

The real danger is if the people of these states remain largely unvaccinated, then new variants might be much less preventable by vaccine and much less treatable.

I saw a similar story yesterday and thought it might be a reporting fluke, but now it's two days in a row. The current numbers are still far lower than they were in January, but this isn't good. Arkansas has one of the lowest vaccination rates.

Arkansas coronavirus cases reach new high for second day since the winter

Arkansas on Thursday reported its largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases for the second time in a row in four months amid urging from Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) for residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Hutchinson has repeatedly urged Arkansans to get the shot due to new variants. The governor tweeted last week, “The overwhelming majority of COVID patients in the hospital have not been vaccinated. These vaccines are effective, but we need more Arkansans to get the shot.”

“Delays in getting vaccinated allow the Delta Variant to spread,” he added. “Let’s get the first shot before the weekend of the 4th starts.”

Isn't it interesting that America, the most powerful nation on earth, is so fractured that centralized processes to deal with a once-in-a-century pandemic are nearly non-existent?

Actually, we had such a process. Obama/Biden had a pandemic team in place when Trump came to office. He disbanded it.

Biden is putting it back together.

Five undervaccinated clusters put the entire United States at risk

The analysis by researchers at Georgetown University identified 30 clusters of counties with low vaccination rates and significant population sizes. The five most significant of those clusters are sprawled across large swaths of the southeastern United States and a smaller portion in the Midwest.

The five clusters are largely in parts of eight states, starting in the east in Georgia and stretching west to Texas and north to southern Missouri. The clusters also include parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee, and are made up of mostly smaller counties but also cities such as Montgomery, Alabama; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Amarillo, Texas.

Most of these states are currently seeing increases in Covid-19 cases.

It's been about a month. With the mostly lower rates, things don't change as rapidly. Florida only reports on a weekly basis, so it came as an unpleasant, but not unexpected, surprise that their recent numbers are approaching 5,000 per day. Still well below the peak, but not good considering that the whole country had 27,000 yesterday. Florida is at #18 just below New York (but probably not for long).

Other Clinton states in the top 25 are #17 NY, #19 IL, #21 NV, #25 MN.

Interesting graph from a WP story on South Dakota governor Kristi Noem and her stance of letting individuals freely choose their own response to COVID-19 in her state. (“We trusted our people, gave them all the information and told them that personal responsibility was the best answer.”) Obviously, NY has a high death toll overall, but much of it was early on before doctors had developed an understanding of the disease. This graph shows deaths in the last year.

whatever, I give up on the image.

Sometimes people need more than information, Governor Noem. The chicken plant workers in your state working shoulder to shoulder and getting severe cases of COVID needed a governor who said, "Make these plants safe for workers or close them."

DeSantis campaign sells ‘Don’t Fauci My Florida’ merch as new coronavirus cases near highest in nation

“Don’t Fauci My Florida,” read drink koozies and T-shirts that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s campaign team rolled out just as his state sees some of the highest coronavirus hospitalizations, new infections and deaths per capita in the country. It’s the latest example of Republicans running on their opposition to virus-fueled shutdowns and mask mandates. A pandemic hero to some and villain to others, Fauci has become a high-profile target.

Perhaps because the situation had clearly changed, Florida now seems to be reporting daily again. Today's tally was just over 7,000. In 5 days, Florida went from #18 to #15 in cases per capita. It will rapidly pass Alabama to reach #14, but it will probably be at least a week before Florida passes New Jersey.

Post from October last year:

Early on, one 'metric' I was watching was how many states had more than 1,000 cases. Early on, it was 10 or 12 or 15, and the highest states were hitting 10,000 a day. Now it has flattened out a lot. A week ago, I noted a day recently with 26 states that each hit 1,000. Today, that number is 29 states with more than 1,000 cases. But the highest ones are 5K-6K.

For a while in June, I think only TX and FL were regularly posting cases over 1,000. Today, 9 states had more than 1,000 new cases.

FL: 7,000 (population rank: #3)
TX: 3,000 (population rank: #2)
CA: 3,000 (population rank: #1)
MO: 2,000 (population rank: #18)
LA: 1,000 (population rank: #25)
GA: 1,000 (population rank: #8)
NY: 1,000 (population rank: #4)
NC: 1,000 (population rank: #9)
AZ: 1,000 (population rank: #14)

Places like Missouri and Louisiana are punching well above their weight.

1 day later: 8,225.

Unless Alabama has a bad day, Florida is already #14 in per capita cases. If things stay somewhat stable, Florida will become #13 in a week.

From WaPo analysis: The result is startling: Missouri’s [current] case rate among unvaccinated people is as high as its overall case rate in mid-January, near the state’s peak of coronavirus infections.

Article has a widget where you can choose a state and see the case rate over time, and then the case rate if only the unvaccinated population are considered.

Florida has reported 12,647 cases today, and has surpassed New Jersey to reach #13 in per capita COVID cases, taking six days to do so.

Florida will be in the top ten in three days.

County vaccination rates by 2020 Trump vote %.

Wow. Pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? The more people in a county voting for Trump, the fewer of them vaccinated. Which is why COVID-19 is rapidly becoming a red state pandemic.
