But adding to the horror of her experience, Imelda Cortez, now 20, is the one facing up to 20 years in prison after being accused of attempted murder due to her country's strict abortion laws, even though she says she didn't try to have an abortion, the Guardian and Reuters report.

Did you read the articles? She was rushed to the hospital because she was in severe pain and bleeding heavily, and the emergency room doctor called the police on her, suspecting an abortion. Like many victims of the draconian Salvadorian laws, she lived in poverty and almost certainly had no access to pre-natal care. It's not at all uncommon for poor women there to be jailed for suffering miscarriages and stillbirths--this is a known human rights issue. It's basically a witchhunt, and you're guilty until proven innocent.

Granted, even if she did do something, this is a woman who spent eight years being sexually abused by her step-father, who apparently threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it. She'd have serious psychological issues at this point and might have actually feared for her life. Pregnant women do sometimes get murdered in places with strict abortion laws. See the Peguero story in the Dominican Republic.

Perhaps but at some point you just have to let people drop the counterweight and be hoisted on their own petard. We would get to see just how important punishing those vile women is to them. Is it worth having factories and offices close? Negative population growth? International boycotts? Come on pro-lifers, if you get your fantasy of Roe going away its put up or shut up time.
