Quicksand in the 70's

We used to have quicksand drills in elementary school. Everyone would run outside and line up, but we always ended up losing a few when we did that. It seemed counter-intuitive to me even at the time, but I was young then and didn't understand how the world worked.

Yeah it was lurking everywhere when we were growing up - TV, movies, videogames, supermarkets.
"Quicksand on aisle 6!" would come over the speakers sometimes while mom wheeled us around the grocery store. Mom was smart, she'd head for a different aisle. That's how we survived.

Then suddenly we all realized how silly it was and it all just sort of... vanished.

I suspect it was meant to keep you from wandering off on your own, but it really got out of hand there for a little while.

Well we used to get stuck in quicksand AND get amnesia. Life in an old movie was hard.
