2 Thess 2:15
EDIT: The best part about this verse is in the implications. Paul was very educated. He wrote, and there's no way what we found are the only letters he ever wrote to churches. Thus, when he says to hold to oral traditions and what has been written, he's not restricting himself to talking about the letters we have in our canon.
eh...I dunno. You may be right. There is another implication in that he uses a past tense. He refers to the teachings (oral and written) as things we have learned or been taught. Not neccessarily new teachings/traditions that would arise by very well meaning Christians during the first few hundred years of the church....
I think a lot of very well meaning christians in the early years of the church in their zeal had perhaps unintentionally inspired fear in the Church by predicting that without the law, Christians everywhere will live hedonistic lives. That notion is neither biblical nor true. Abraham and his descendants, Isaac and Jacob, lived in the Promise Land without any behavior-prescribing guidelines from God! Because we love God, we live differently...not because we have the most accurate theology, but because of our love for Him.
Guides for thought and conduct are important, but they are not the basis for our relationship with God. Moral codes are not letters of affection. Neither are they adoption papers. Even perfect obedience will not sustain the love-relationship founded on His promises.
