Is speaking in tongues deliberate? Is it something you do or something the spirit inspires and does? Is it its own language or the ability to speak different languages?

We teamed up with Faith Counseling. Can they help you today?

The short answer is all of the above. The long answer can be illustrated by the fact I've taught a 12 week class on just this topic alone.

Tongues are a sign - To unbelievers By believers "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:" "And these signs shall follow them that believe; ...they shall speak with new tongues; (I Cor 14:22 and Mark 16:17)

With the groups that received tongues in Scripture, it states "all" that were there received (Acts 4:31; 10:44-46; 19:2-6) Also, "Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?" Is referring to the gifts of tongues with interpretation which is often used in church gatherings and not all believers there would be used with that gift at the same time.

    There's a diversity of tongues =
"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues." (II Cor 12:28) including the edification for the believer (II Cor 14:4). This is often referred to as the prayer language. Also, there is tongues for the edification of the church such as the gift of tongues with interpretation (II Cor 14:5). There's many purposes for speaking in tongues such as "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God." (Acts 10:46). ."What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." (I Cor 14:15) "But the tongue can no man tame; ...." (Jam 3:8) but God can Another purpose - "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life," (Jude).

It can be a language but one not learned by the believer speaking in tongues.
"They were all filled and equipped with the Holy Spirit and were inspired to speak in tongues—empowered by the Spirit to speak in languages they had never learned!," (Acts 2 TPT). There's about 6800 different languages with some of them being clicks but God isn't limited to those "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." (I Cor 13:1).

All tongues can be interpreted. "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret." (I Cor 14:13).

I've only heard singing in tongues a few times and it was beautiful.

Also, I don't have to have science to support Scripture for me to believe it. Think it's interesting that research reveals that praying in tongues for extended periods of time improves our immune systems by 35 to 40%. Research by Dr Carl Petersen, ORU, brain specialist.

I Cor 14:16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

Here is your answer about can you initiate tongues. Yes, you can. However, the gift "various kinds of tongues," includes tongues and interpretation in a church. That is like prophecy and only brought about by the Spirit leading. I have only given a tongue in a church a couple of times in decades, but the Holy Spirit led me to do it and the Pastor or speaker interpreted it.

The language is whatever the Spirit gives, sometimes it might be a known language but mostly it is not. I'm not sure about other believers, but my tongues seem to draw on a host of languages, sometimes it might be the same, but I notice far different dialects. Again, note the gift of "various kinds of tongues." While I believe any Christian can speak in tongues as a sign of the baptism of the Spirit, not all will speak in tongues to be interpreted or in tongues as a known foreign language. Thus, many Charismatics do believe in this separation from personal tongues (spoken at will) versus the gift (spoken for a particular circumstance and purpose). Hope that helps.

Love the Holy Spirit! Desire to have spiritual gifts from Him ! Remember the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the common good ! Don’t seek to pursue self fulfillment but seek the gifts that you may do the things that bring delights to God.

Joh 4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
so according to the word ..how to worship in spirit..(MUST)

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Jesus said (to warn his disciples against counterfeit {tares})

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
    17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

package deal upon receiving the Holy Spirit..

first identifier as a child is born it cries, so when you are born again (Gods way) you cry out with the language God gives you. You have still overall control to stop and start as you will; but it is now the spirit making intersession for you with a PURE undifileable language.

How to "Pray without ceasing." (I Thess 5:17). 'What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." (I COR 14:15). "Then what am I to do? I will pray with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will also pray [intelligently] with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will sing [intelligently] with my mind and understanding also." AMPC

Then at times,, this is by the Holy Spirit's leading
"And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words." Rom 8:26

    repeat...

Joh 4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

they ALL can !! but in the Church (people not a building) no more than 3 etc
Jesus already said to go into private place to pray and God will answer openly...

john 3v3 + must be born again. When a baby is born usually cries out or makes sound, so do you when you are born again of the Spirit ,a pure language God gives you upon making 1st contact, receiving the Holy Ghost !

    mark 16 v16 full deal !!

most so called Christians are only religious to varying levels and in a holding pattern of repentance. IN the book of Acts most times mention tongues as 1st evidence.

just like the Jews did not understand when they crucified Jesus Christ ,so many today dont understand this and belief...

eg many think belief is acceptance of God or Jesus Christ to varying levels...that makes them a Christian ..I believe there is a president in the United States (touchy subject) ,does that make me automatically an American citizen !! There are protocols in place first, same with God,
    eg acts 2v38,2v4 etc

In regards to speaking in tongues, I will never forget when my friend (who previously attended an Assemblies of God church) went to a Bible study at his Pastor's house once a week and sometimes the Pastor would speak in tongues during their Bible study. My friend worked with a woman who was a Baptist and she was terrified of being around people who spoke in tongues, yet my friend convinced her to come to the Bible study to see for herself that she has nothing to fear. When his lady friend showed up at the Bible study, as soon as she walked in the door, the Pastor began speaking in tongues very loudly with his hands high in the air, then he fell backwards to the floor! My friend said that even he was freaked out by the incident and when he turned around, his lady friend was running for the hills! :fearscream:

This forum is for believers who believe in the spiritual gifts and they're for today according to forum rules.

ParadiseMkX, Your discernment is probably letting you know.

But can't be spiritual tongues because "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" I Cor 12:4, 10

In other words, these tongues are given to believers.

    The enemy offers counterfeit.

HOWEVER, "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" Marr 7:11

"Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." I Cor 14:1

"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant." I Cor 12:1

" ...the tongue can no man tame; ...." (Jam 3:8) but God can.

Find we haven't renewed our minds when we dont accept any portion of Scripture.

Personal example - Read "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine..." (Pro 17:22) several times and thought that's a nice little verse.

Recently, reading "God's Prescription Book" by Dr Avery Jackson, a neurosurgeon and a Christian. So he takes a different look at the impact of Scripture. An example is from the chapter on laughter - Says our bodies can't tell the difference between an authentic laugh or when we make ourselves laugh. But "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine..." (Pro 17:22) Laughter, joy, and exercise affect the same receptors that pain does.(A merry heart improves our immune system. Probably more benefits).

So that causes me to look at other Scripture as well in a different perspective such as "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matt 4:4

Now my friend and I both believe in the spiritual gift of tongues. By sharing this testimony from my friend, I am not trying to discredit the spiritual gift of tongues. Only the abuse of it, which happens at times, but we must not throw out the baby with the bath water.
