  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Depends on the denomination. In the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, pastors are trained and certified by the synod in order to serve in LCMS congregations. Someone who has been ordained outside of the LCMS must go through a training program called "colloquy", usually for a year, and then a vicarage or internship period before receiving a call to be a pastor in an LCMS congregation.

Typically, each denomination has it's own "rules", and because it's theologicaly based, people know that the pastor is in agreement with the theological stance.

So, in order to "change" denominations need to be a serious personal revelation, and the denomination must agree with the change that has taken place.

Not sure about non-denominational churches...

So if the denomination does not agree with the "change", I suppose the preacher would have to get re-ordained? I guess it makes sense that ordinations are not transferable between denominations.

Well, "ordination" is for life, regardless of denomination (as long as it was in a Christian denomination). It's whether or not that particular church body will extend a call to someone who has been ordained outside of that church body without additional education and training.

Some non-denominational churches do not require any formal training to be a pastor, so I wouldn't expect there to be any problem with one of those, regardless of where the pastor was ordained.

in a word, yes, it can limit you, but if your firm in your discernment that the denomination you wish to be ordained by is the same denomination you wish to serve in then barring a personal revelation why would you wish to go somewhere else? my training was non demoninational and i find if you choose to go a certain demoninations they don't view your status as valid, however where i am serving now is unafliated with any demonination so i get away with it
