Hi everyone... sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'd like some clarification of this passage. It almost sounds like it's suggesting Elijah has returned as John the Baptist? But that sounds really off-the-wall to me, so I'm thinking I missed something important - how was Jesus "talking to them about John the Baptist"? What's the connection? Thanks in advance!
Matthew 17
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
[NIV]
Matthew 17
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
