I was looking at an icon of the exaltation of the precious and life giving cross, and on the stand (ambo?) on which the cross was raised there is what looks like a small door near the bottom. I asked my priest what this signified, but he did not know. Looking at the icon below, the stand seems to be made to look like a building with a window as well. Any thoughts on what this is meant to signify? Thanks.

I was thinking that as well. A symbol of the tomb, a la Adams skull which is normally found at the base of the cross.

or the building that was erected over the Tomb.

We gifted this icon to our son and daughter in law this weekend. I had a difficult time finding a description. Some Orthodox historian needs to take on the task of a website explaining icons
