This requires a crack science team to figure out what's going on here. Send in two geologists, two archaeologists, a physicist, a chemist, a cameraman, and Scarlett Johannson.

From what I’ve heard you can’t because NASA will shoot them down then cover up the incident. ;)

What about that part where ice core samples showed a tropical rain forest type climate at one time?

Is that true?

As others have noted, there was a tropical jungle there 90 million years ago. That, I'm willing to bet, was not discovered by ice cores.

What the ice cores have shown, I don't really know. But I doubt they show a tropical rain forest there in times relevant to homo sapiens.

Okay ... so we have a rain forest at the South Pole 90 million years ago.

Today we have an ice continent.

What happened that changed a rain forest into an ice continent?

A good-sized asteroid hit the earth bringing the Cretaceous to an end and cooling global temperatures. I'm not a climate expert, but I believe that's one extremely pertinent fact.

Some more detail here.

Well, see all those craters on the moon?
Every now and then it misses a pitch and we catch it.

If ChristianAnswers.net rated a mention this forum can't be too far behind with the anti-science nonsense posted here by select individuals.:)
Do you know the difference between antiscience and no science?

If so, is Genesis 1 antiscience or no science?

What happened that changed a rain forest into an ice continent?

It was originally a part of Gondwanaland and located in the tropics. It eventually broke off and slid south to its present position.

From the end of the Neoproterozoic era to the Cretaceous, Antarctica was part of the supercontinent Gondwana.[28] Antarctica as we know it today was formed as Gondwana broke apart around 183 Ma, separating into Antarctica, South America and Australia.[29] For a large proportion of the Phanerozoic, Antarctica experienced a tropical or temperate climate, and was covered in forests.

I thought of that, but it looks like by 90 MYA, Antarctica was already pretty close to its present position wrt the Pole. It may have been tropical in the climate sense, but not the geographical one.

This rainforest core sample came from a spot that was then at 82 degrees latitude.

You're right. I wrongly assumed that "Phanerozoic" covered 90ma.

I broke my own rule about checking things properly.

Thanks

So what caused the conditions for a tropical environment in Antarctica?
The CO₂ concentration would need to be around 1,120–1,680 parts per million at this latitude.

Interestingly enough around 84 million years ago Earth experienced a considerable axial tilt which would have affected temperatures.

The link in #44 notes "The sun was not the reason the Cretaceous era had a warmer climate than today; it produced 1-2 percent less heat. Earth was warmer during the Cretaceous era because the atmosphere contained 3-6 times more carbon dioxide than the current era."

This fits pretty well with your figure of ~3-4.

Per wiki:

Cretaceous Thermal Maximum

During the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum (CTM), atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rose to over 1000 parts per million

I don't give answers to people who are being deliberately vague unless you provide the background behind your questions.
In other words, the question is too hard?

I almost totally agree with you.

The only thing I disagree with is your word choice in your last sentence.

Some think it was a water canopy around the earth.

It's possible that it had something to do with this:

Genesis 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

Ice cores? Tropical? No, I don't think so. You won't find any evidence of a tropical past in the ice cores.

Now, was Antarctica once tropical. Yep. It's in the rocks. (They're below the ice.)

No it's because your questions are meaningless without providing a background.
Meaning you don't know the difference between "antiscience" and "no science"?
