Proverbs is a great book.

I've found numerous items in there which have struck me.

1:7-- the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and understanding.

As I've talked with atheists and unbelievers about the gospel, this passage has come up.

The interesting thing that strikes me is-- the phrase

The fear of God is the BEGINNING of knowledge.

It's just the start. As in taking a journey, and you take the first step.

Having a good reverence for God helps us recognize the importance of prioritizing, of our human limitations, that we are dependent on him, and his provision, etc....

Another one which I find helpful is 3:5-8.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he shall direct your paths.
Don't be wise in your own estimation of yourself, fear God and depart from evil.

This will be healthy to your body, and nourishment to your bones.

It's a good word.

Thanks for sharing, Steve! And atheists don't fear God so they have no knowledge. ahhh

Well... they have knowledge....

But, like it's written in Matthew 7....

They skipped over the beginning/foundation of knowledge and started trying to build a house on the sand.

Houses built on a bad foundation don't last when the storms come.

Another passage in Proverbs I like is 29:18.

Where there is no revelation the people cast off restraint. But happy are those who keep the law.

As I've considered this, it strikes me as a manifold set of possibilities, but I get that

For people who don't take the time to learn to understand why the law matters, they blow it off and ignore it.

But for people who do make it important to learn to understand God's Law and keep it, they are happy people.

Take a look at Romans 8:3-8.

The only way to keep God's law is by focusing our thinking on spiritual things. It's impossible any other way.

Yet another passage that I like is 27:5-6.

Pro 27:5-6 WEB 5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

This can be hard when dealing with people who are close.

I think that Psalm 141:5 goes along with it, as does Galatians 6:1-3, and Matthew 18:15-17.
