I think in general, you can publish anything you want, but you could face criminal charges if it directly incites violence. And the burden of proof is on the prosecution. Publication of child inappropriate contentography is illegal. I don't know the laws on classified data, but I think the burden of proof is pretty high. I also think publication of confidential personal information, like SS numbers, credit card data, and medical records can be prosected. False or fraudulent advertising can be prosected, I think.

To my knowledge, things like libel and plagiarism are not criminal offenses, but whoever publishes such material can be sued for civil damages. Again, the burden of proof is on the plaintiff. And you're much more likely to be liable by publishing material about private citizens, than about public figures.

if they reported on something the government was actually doing, then they have no problems. If their information is false, that's an entirely different can of worms. They have no obligation to the administration to hide information they think is newsworthy. They have no obligation to keep a secret just because the government claims it is for our safety. The person the government should be upset with is the one who let their secret plan leak.
