  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello

Does anyone else go through phases of procrastination and lack of motivation? I am realllly struggling with this right now. Usually, I like to get thinkgs done right away, and I study like crazy for all of my exams. I am not the kind of person who just gets good grades, I really have to work for it and I usually do.

But for some reason, this semester it just seems like I don't care! It's really starting to bother me. ..and now I have finals that I am sooo not ready for

Does anyone have some advise for how to stay motivated? I am only taking one course during the summer because I think a bit of a break will be good for me...also I need to make some money for next year!!

:sigh: Any advise would be greatly appreciated...I have been praying for motivation etc., but I seem to be lacking in self dicipline.

I too am a procrastinator, but I do have those semi-dramatic moments when I realize that things are important and I force myself to do it (think that real determined face, maybe some music from the Rocky movies playin' in the background, all of that :D)

What helps me though, is to pray. If I may, I would share the following prayers:

The Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner.

(You can say this prayer any time. I say it because I have trouble falling asleep, to pay attention in classes I can't stand, when I want to pray and don't have the words, etc.)

And another from my Orthodox Prayer Book:

Lord Jesus Christ, only-begotten Son of the eternal Father, You said through Your prophet David: Man goes out to his work and his labor until evening. Through the mouth of the blessed apostle Paul, You said: He who does not work, shall not eat. And from Your own most pure lips You said: Without Me, You can do nothing. I have listened to Your divine words with my whole soul and heart, O Lord, and I turn to Your goodness in humility. Send your grace to help me, a sinner, so that I may complete the work which I now begin, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Taking some time out and praying before any task, usually helps. Even if you don't expect that you'll actually do the task after the prayer, there's nothing wrong with trying. Alot of the time I just took it in baby steps -- I just made the promise to myself to pray and nothing more, and to my surprise and relief my resolve changed to actually get stuff done.

I'm also taking summer classes so my brain doesn't get lazy (and having to not go back home is a plus...). Since you're only taking one class, maybe you could get a summer job too. I would apply now though -- I had to, otherwise the high schoolers would've beat me to it :p

I don't know if this is the case for you, but when I was alot worse off then I was now, I took my lack of self-discipline and spiraled it downward to the point of despair. Please, never let it get that far. That is not what God wants for you.

Many hugs, and I will be praying for you.

Christ Is Risen!

Sometimes having a study buddy who is big on actually studying helps. As for papers, I've never been able to overcome that procrastinating habit (well I did on one paper, but that's because I had three others due the same day). Goodluck. Take some time to pray and just go for it. Hope you do well on finals.

I've been going through a phase like that for the last seven years. :) One thing I've noticed though is the less time I have for other things, the more I procrastinate. So when I feel unmotivated I make the time to do something else, usually something I enjoy and that is physical. I'll take a walk with my dog or do some crafts. Sometimes it helps to do something that is not necessarily fun but is productive like house cleaning, grocery shopping, etc.

If you take 15 minutes or even an hour to do something like that it can help relax and destress yourself enough that it'll be easier to get into the work you need to get done.

I am procrastinating at this precise moment:-( My paper is do tomorrow but I am just struggling so much to start it partially because I know it is a rough draft and my teacher will correct my mistakes, but I am slowly but gratefully understanding that this is not a spirit of God who wants me to do my best in everything but I am thankful that I found this post because the responses have helped to motivate me and also gave me solutions!!

I'll pray for myself and others who are struggling with this problem to have victory over procrastination through Jesus Christ!!
