I’m Catholic. I know what the Church teaches but I cannot help but think of scripture where ‘whitewashed tombs’ are described.

I have thought of that exact passage lately when the Trads are talking about how poorly people dress for mass.

I thought - how about teaching them "why", rather than just telling them they need a longer skirt or long sleeves? It's much easier to change ones clothing than ones heart and mind.

The Trad position has become my least favorite because of this.

I am not not the type to bash. My belief is if one follows Christ with good intentions then that is between them and Christ. We work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

Much agreed - some of the people I know that are striving the hardest to follow Jesus are not Catholic. God knows his own, and Heaven will not be divided into denominations like Earth is. And it will not only have Catholics.

Which raises the biggest question - what is the common thread among all that leads to salvation, if it's not merely subscribing to the right denomination?

How long ago did you convert Michie? I tried to about 7 years ago - but I'm not sure it took. After running into so much madness from Charismatic slain in the spirit & tongues, to liberalism, to socialist views - I never really immersed myself, as I kept being repelled by what I found.

I definitely have gotten out of the pool, and am sitting on the edge for now.

It sounds like your experiences mainly involved the two farthest ends of the spectrum, and both are crazy. I'm sorry to hear that, it can be upsetting. I actually experienced both of those same things, only in protestantism before I converted. The evangelical church I had spent the first 20-25 years of my life attending suddenly went full on nutjob charismatic because they wanted to be like Bethel. Eventually I left there and spent a few months with a Presbyterian church, which was super liberal and SJW-y, until I finally landed in RCIA.

My impression has always been that the traditionalist communities are neither of those things and are just purely Catholic. If you have one within a reasonable driving distance it might be worth checking out if for no other reason than giving yourself a fair chance to experience the proper Catholic Church.

'Once you belong to Christ,' said Fr. Rick Walsh, 'you belong to all others who belong to Christ as well.'

July 2, 2020 (Sons of St. Joseph) — On June 28, 2020, Paulist priest Rick Walsh offered “a reflection” entitled “We All Belong to Each Other” at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New York City; the parish is the motherhouse of the Paulist order. On June 25, 2020, Walsh also was the “celebrant” for the parish’s Pride Mass sponsored by the Paulist’s LGBT ministry “Out at St. Paul. (OSP)” During his “reflection” Walsh said:
A long time back I knew some Paulist priests who were actually good and faithful men. Alas all dead now. The present batch of Paulists is a train wreck. An absolute wreck.

One of the last good ones: Paid Notice: Deaths COMBER, THOMAS E.

It's something how that happens Chevy, isn't it? How things go from good and solid to "what the heck is this?", in a relatively short time. Yet so rarely does it get corrected that fast.

I could see the seeds of destruction amidst the Paulists in the early 1980's when some of the great ones were still alive. I'm not sure exactly why it happened, but they were another of the many groups that sought after relevance and in the process gave up the faith and taught the incoming Paulists a bunch of pottage.

If you do get down to Stillwater, and I know it's a long way to go, do drop in on St. Michael's. Do check out their on line thingie too. St. Michael's Catholic Church

We've moved. So we are looking to reattach to a parish in our new location. It's a challenge. Trying to avoid anything that has even a hint of the out at St. Paul's flavor to it. So far we have a few good candidate parishes and we hope things return to normal after the epidemic so we can go in person again.
