Being of color and poor is a bad combination and a trap, yet many whites are also just as trapped and poor. So perhaps we could do more to end this trap if we stopped ignoring this fact and started working together. In Buffalo several communities did just this forming farms in the inner city. Anyone black or white or whatever, if they work at the farm they share in the produce.

Where these farms reside the levels of food insecurity has dropped and school performance improved. Its a causal relationship, one we should all learn from.

This reminds me of the stories about the Jamestown colony in Virginia. Many of the original settlers were privileged aristocracy that looked at the Spanish gold ships sailing from the Americas laden with gold and thought they would come here and pick up gold bars and become wealthy with little work. When they arrived at Jamestown, they did not want to work for their food. So the colony set up a rule that those who worked got to split the produce. Those who didn't were on their own. Seems the wisdom of our founding settlers is still just as wise.
