Portland, Maine visit in September

My wife, my mother-in-law and I plan to visit Portland in September for 2 nights and was wondering if anyone could tell us about cheap places to eat and gift shops in the vicinity of the Hilton Garden Inn and the Maine State Pier.

For eating, on Commerical St. there is Ri Ra, Dry Dock, 3 Dollar Dewey's and my favorite Becky's Diner. That is further down a ways from the pier heading toward the bridge. Good food and really fast service. There are several other little places to eat too. As for gift shops, I really don't know but the Old Port has a lot of stores.
