Very sad that the delay in giving the parents the full rights any parent should have for their child have caused the situation to now pass the point where the doctor can help.

Dear Lord take Charlie to Your loving care if it is Your will. And hold the hearts of his parents gently in Your hands at this time of great sorrow. Bless them for fighting for his life with all they had. Bless the professionals who took care of him and still do in this time. For the doctors who kept fighting until this last brain scan showed that it was now past where they could help, we give thanks Lord. For those doctors and nurses who have cared for him even in the shadow of sorrow, no matter what their opinion on what should be done, we give thanks Lord. For the parents who will now share the pain of Our Lady and watch helplessly as their child dies...may their moments, at his bedside, be joined with the moments of Our Lady at the foot of the Cross. May the pain of the loss of a child, that has no words, be comforted in the healing and enveloping silence of Your Love Lord.

Guide future cases like this with your wisdom and enlighten the hearts of all people to see what You have already taught: That a life with suffering is still a life made in Your Image and worthy of all chances and efforts to live, even when it seems the darkest. Let them see that you entrust parents with the care and charge of their children and may all parents strive with love and effort to the last measure for their children. For all those who spend their lives caring for the sick, we ask you give them hope in a job that so often steals it. For all those who give all they have for their children, who are a precious gift and grave responsibility for them, we pray for Your strength and wisdom to always to what is right...to fight with great determination and to let go when that fight is done. True hope Lord always lies in You. Christian Hope is the Hope of the Resurrection. We firmly and without doubt place Charlie in Your arms and that Hope. The Hope of the Living Christ who calls all home who hear and follow His call.

This must have been devastating for the parents - the doctor they had pinned their hopes on actually let them down

That the professor was invited in December and did not come to see him until July is very sad. If, as the parents others believe and GOSH admits there is no agreement on, Charlies brain was not in a state of irreversible damage in the January scan, that was the time to make the best difference in his condition.

I can not comment on intention but the timeline of when the professor showed interest and how much, if accurate, is...interesting to say the least.

There are many moral issues that come out of this. From parents rights, patient rights, the nature of suffering and many others. I do wonder as time goes on, what God will use the life of this precious little one for. I have seen people conflict greatly over this case. But I have also seen people of diverse views converse in calm and productive dialogue over joint concern and compassion for Charlie, his parents and his caregivers.

Over a decade ago there was a case like this in Texas and some other places where there are laws that allow a hospital ethics board to suspend care. One thing is certain...as science increases in ability to extend life, such cases will become more common. We have to, at the same time, develop a way to deal with them while not treating them all as cookie cutters and respecting unique circumstances in each case. And we have to do that in a world where information comes fast first and accurate later. May the Lord guide us in His wisdom.
