Not much chance of wiping out Christianity . Pope just doesn't have that much to say about the continuation of Christianity. If he should succeed in completely secularizing the RCC it wouldn't stop the rest of Christianity from continuing on.

I think it's just a hypothetical intended to grab attention. No need to assume everything is expressed literally from folks in the media. Though they do seem to be succeeding in making fools of most of us.
