Politico inadvertently gives probably the number one reason why Obama, and not Hillary, needs to get the Democratic nomination, if the Democrats want a sure win in '08:
While this applies most markedly to Giuliani's campaign, it really applies to most of the Republican campaigns as well. If Hillary doesn't get the nomination, then the Right will be deprived of arguably its number one reason for anyone to vote for them.
Giuliani's unspoken pitch, according to GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio, goes something like this: "You need me to protect you from her. And no matter how bad you think I am, she is far worse."/
"In order to make up for his [ideological] sins, he points to his electablity over her," says Fabrizio, who isn't working for a presidential campaign. "Without her, there will be more focus on where he differs with the base and no longer does he have that invisible shield."
And if a Clinton restoration ceases to be that which keeps conservatives up at night, Republican primary voters may turn from long-range concerns who is best equipped to defeat Her and toward a more straightforward decision about whom they would most like to be their nominee.
