Police reject the 'incredibly ignorant suggestion'

Democratic nominee campaigns in Michigan while Harris forced off the trail; Peter Doocy reports.

Law enforcement groups blasted Vice President Joe Biden for again suggesting training police to shoot suspects "in the leg" is a viable way to avoid fatalities, decrying the proposal as dangerous and ignorant.

During an ABC News town hall Thursday, Biden gave the shooting advice while talking about broader police reforms, which have been on the public conscience since the killing of George Floyd sparked nationwide racial unrest.

"There's a lot of things we've learned and it takes time, but we can do this," Biden said. "You can ban chokeholds ... you have to teach people how to de-escalate circumstances. ... Instead of anybody coming at you and the first thing you do is shoot to kill, you shoot them in the leg."

Police officers and law enforcement groups pounced on the suggestion that officers would train to shoot someone in the leg rather than "center mass," the largest part of the body that has long been the firearms training target.

John Evans, president of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, told Fox News that Biden's suggestion is "absolutely ridiculous" and "incredibly ignorant."

"The guy's clueless," Evans said. "And I know he's just trying to appease his left-wing base but it's a really foolish statement."

Doesn't this demonstrate Biden's capacity to bring people together? He just further alienates all the Police across the nation with this foolishness. Joe doesn't even understand why the Police have the certain protocols which they do.

Anybody who has spent more than seven seconds in a combat situation knows better than that. Trying to hit a moving target in an arm or a leg is akin to trying to hit a toothpick with a BB gun. When a threat is moving towards you, your goal is to neutralize the threat. If commands don't work, then you stop the threat....which usually means you kill the perp. It's unfortunate, but you'll come out of the encounter alive.

Legally speaking both police and civilians do not "shoot to kill", as it would be illegal to shoot someone with the intent of killing them, even in self-defense situations. The defender shoots to stop the attack, and (since lethal force is authorized), killing the attacker is sometimes the result, but it is never the intent.

As mentioned above, attempting to shoot the attacker in the leg or other "non-fatal" spot would be an exercise in futility, and would allow the attack to continue, with possibly fatal results for the intended victim. Additionally, innocent bystanders would be endangered by such futile attempts; the safest situation for them would be for the defender's bullets to hit and imbed in the attackers "center of mass" (chest and abdomen).
