Put on your Bible antennae, and tune them up, because I have a question for you. Is there a family dog in the Bible?

If I were asking the question about the ancient Romans, it would be easy to answer. The Romans were fond of dogs, and the bigger the better. If you go to the ruins of Pompeii, you can see the remains of a porch in front of one of the houses, inlaid with black and white tiles, and some red for the tongue, to show a fierce watchdog all ready to protect his family. CAVE CANEM, reads the inscription: Beware of the Dog! If you read the Odyssey, set in ancient Greece, you will come upon the scene where Odysseus, back home after twenty years, but in disguise so that the wicked suitors for his wife’s hand in marriage will not know who he is, is walking to his own house, alongside a faithful herder of pigs. And he sees, lying on a heap of refuse, a very old dog, twenty years old, a white hound dog he trained himself, and named Argos – Flash, we might say. Poor Flash is half devoured with fleas. Nobody takes care of him anymore. And even though the man next to Odysseus doesn’t recognize his master, Flash does, and he flattens his ears a little, and tries to wag his tail, and he whimpers for joy. But he is too weak to move.

    I thought you’d like this.

Why should such a humble little thing like that be in the Bible? But why shouldn’t it be? God is the maker of all creatures great and small. He likes dogs too; he made them, and made them so as to be a friend to man. When you see your dog wagging his tail for joy, remember that he is doing what he should, and remember too that if you could someday be as innocent and as loyal as your dog, you would be a fine creature indeed.

A year ago I had to give up my beloved Husky, Bear. My husband had died, I could not afford him, I could not afford to have him groomed and I couldn't do it, I am in a wheel chair, bad heart and in hospice at home, also for a year. I think giving him up is what tipped me over the edge along with the physical pain, and my blood pressure damaged my heart. His new owner has very kindly kept me updated all this time and sent pictures. He has received everything I prayed he would get---everything. God has answered all my prayers for a dog! How much more will He answer our prayers for ourselves and for others. My last prayer for him was that he would be freed from his fear of the bedroom---I do not know what his previous owners had done to him, but he was terrified of being in the bedroom. He would only come in just to check if you are alright, just close enough where you can reach out and just barely pet him, then he'd run out. I tried to force him unto the bed once, thinking he would be so much more comfortable in my husbands old bed. He just shook like a leaf and whimpered, terrified and as soon as I let go--he ran off. His owners had been asked how long he had been crated each day and where---their answer was---in the bedroom for 12-15 hours a day and no doggie door.

We trained him to use the doggie door, it was in the bathroom of the bedroom. He'd run through to use the door and ran through to get back into the house, never staying in the bedroom. I never had the heart to try to get him unto the bed again, he had been just so horribly scared of it.
This July 4, he reacted to the fireworks. He never had before. He is otherwise such a calm dog that the noise of the fireworks never bothered him. This time they have those very loud cannon booms and he, and his furry buddie, ran into the bedroom with her---he laid down in the bedroom until 3 am and then went to lay down on the cool tile---he loves the cold. She and I were just elated! His trust and love for her , and the fear of the booming noise, outweighed the fear of the bedroom! Yes, God takes care and loves dogs also. He even answered that prayer for him. He knows now that there is nothing to fear in there.

lock your dog and your wife in the trunk of your car for 24 hours. Which one will be happy to see you when you open the trunk?

I wish we humans could have the love of dogs.

Dogs have been our furry friends since time immemorial.
For centuries, dogs have chewed up our carpets, drooled, pooed and ponged.
Despite all the progress we have made as human beings, our dogs are still content with life's simplest pleasures. They are still chasing cats now just as they did back in the Iron age. And they still make an excellent substitute for a vacuum cleaner when we accidentally drop that packet of biscuits.
Our canine friends accept us for who we are and do not judge us by our appearance. However bad we reek, they will still climb all over us, lick our faces, and take us for walks.

Well, I don't know about dropped biscuits---but one time we cooked off some chicken legs with the drumsticks attached. I was transferring the pieces to another container---Sparky, as usual, right by my side---praying for some---it was answered. I dropped a piece, it was gone out the back door before I could say "NO!!" It never even touched the floor, she caught it mid air! I went outside, she was already nearly done with it, just looked up at me, grinned as big as the sky as if to say thanks and polished it off!

So not the "I'm sorry" guilty look then! I love it when dogs give us that guilty look!

Never once, in the over 12 years we had her, did she ever display the slightest tinge of guilt!! And she weighed all of 6 lb when we got her, tiny ball of fur, Norwegian Elkhound. (We didn't know for several years what she was until a vet told us, for he had raised them.) I guess you have to be pretty tough, agile, and quick minded when bred to hunt bear and elk and you weigh all of 45 lb! Guilt is not going to chase down bears!

    -

I had a St. Bernard who was "Momma" to my cat when she was just a tiny kitten---she used to try and nurse from his belly---once in a while, he'd yelp, but he never stopped her. She was too fast for us and had one litter before we could get her fixed. He raised all 5 of them, also. Momma cat was heart broken when we had to put him down. She would sit on his sleeping bag outside and meow in such a forlorn way it would make us cry.
