Someone once told me these types of palms are some of the oldest, predating even the age of the dinosaurs... Not sure if he was right, but I like the concept.

If you think about it, it looks kind of like a giant flower. Maybe pterodactyls pollinated it. :)

Here's a more mature one I found... I bet some ancient animal used to eat that center part.... Something with a more robust digestive system than an insect or bird, for sure.

Wow that guy was right that told me they predate the dinosaurs! :eek: And they do get "pollinated" like giant flowers -now that was a guess on my part... Thanks for identifying that species!

"Diverse fossils of this family have been dated to 135 mya, indicating that diversity may have been much greater before the Jurassic and late Triassic mass extinction events"

Cycads are gymnosperms (naked seeded), meaning their unfertilized seeds are open to the air to be directly fertilized by pollination
