Someone once told me these types of palms are some of the oldest, predating even the age of the dinosaurs... Not sure if he was right, but I like the concept.

If you think about it, it looks kind of like a giant flower. Maybe pterodactyls pollinated it.

Here's a more mature one I found... I bet some ancient animal used to eat that center part.... Something with a more robust digestive system than an insect or bird, for sure.

If that is a sago palm, it is not actually a palm. It is a cycads

Wow that guy was right that told me they predate the dinosaurs! And they do get "pollinated" like giant flowers -now that was a guess on my part... Thanks for identifying that species!

Cycads are gymnosperms (naked seeded), meaning their unfertilized seeds are open to the air to be directly fertilized by pollination
