PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has sent a letter to the major modelmaking/wargaming company, Games Workshop over the companies use of plastic fur for some of their models.

The letter reads as follows:
Dear Mr Rountree,
I’m writing to you on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals (PETA) to ask that you consider removing “fur” garments from
your Warhammer characters at the next opportunity.
From the mighty Leman Russ and Horus Lupercal to Chaos Warriors and
the Sisters of Silence, Warhammer features an abundance of characters
who wear what appear to be animal pelts, which just doesn’t add up.
These battle-hardened warriors are known for their martial prowess – but
wearing the skins of dead animals doesn’t take any skill.
Indeed, nothing on the bloody battlefields of Warhammer’s war-torn
world could match the horrific reality that foxes, minks, rabbits, and other
living beings experience at the hands of the fur trade. Those killed for their
fur typically first endure a bleak life inside a tiny, filthy wire cage before
being electrocuted, drowned, or even skinned alive. Or they may be out
minding their business and get caught in horrific bone-crushing steel-jaw
traps – often languishing for days before eventually dying of hunger,
thirst, or blood loss.
And while we appreciate that these are fictional characters, draping them
in what looks to be a replica of a dead animal sends the message that
wearing fur is acceptable – when, in fact, it has no more place in 2017
than it would in the year 40,000.
Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Yvonne Taylor
Senior Manager of Corporate Projects

Can we just... can we just bask in the complete idiocy of this whole thing.
Like, the fact that no REAL animals were killed to make the furs in question, since they are, you know, PLASTIC and RESIN just passed these people, let alone the fact that the setting is in a universe which does not exist and the animals are non-existent.

I will have to say though: this is a BRILLIANT example of a First World problem.

I never knew that foxes, minks and rabbits had to fight against cultists using the dark power of the warp to serve the gods of chaos, ancient robots bent all destroying all organic life down to the microscopic level, swarms of alien locusts with every horrendous biological adaptation imaginable, etc. Thanks for the lesson in Biology Peta!

... I know this is sarcasm but I SO want to state that technically he WAS a Loyalist. With severe daddy issues.
Touche.

The idea of Leman Russ without fur to protect people's feelings is particularly cute

I am a member of the other PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals.

Fire up the grill. I want a good T bone, medium. :)

I saw something on Tumblr about dove nuggets. And I will not lie: I want to try one.

But yeah, PETA sucks.

Fake fürs and synthetic leather, including the representation of such items are tricky issues for vegans. I can see where PETA is coming from, but I also see supporting manufacturers of good fake items, which PETA also does, at least in the US. I have a synthetic leather bag by a vegan designer...it's lovely, but looks and feels so much like leather that people assume I've made some change in my core values when they see me with it. It's promoted some discussion but I'm thinking of going back to a cloth bag.

But here's the thing though: it's not even synthetic fur. It literally IS plastic fur.
This is one of things they're taking issue with:

See that pelt in the bottom left? That is literally a hunk of plastic molded and shaped like a wolf pelt.

This isn't the issue of synthetic fur or fake fur. It is literally non-existent fur.

I understand that, and I don't think it's one of PETA'S better campaigns. I wonder if the issue is cosplay creating a demand for fur. I'm a reenactor and like cosplay, and it's not the most vegan friendly environment.
But this would be pretty low on my list of concerns.

It's not a cosplay issue. They are literally taking issue with the fact that many of Games Workshop's products have models that can be optionally built with bits of plastic molded like fur pelts.
