  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hmmm.....

I guess I'd have to say Gateway, because I have a Gateway laptop and my parent's computer (that I use a lot) is a Gateway...and we have a Gateway store just down the road. So if there's a problem, I can just drive it there to have it taken care of.

But in general, it doesn't matter too much...as long as it works, it's not too slow, and doesn't cause problems.

Well, I have to say... I just got a ThinkPad, and I am totally in love with this computer. Slick and well-produced. Also runs Unix well.

I have had a lot of negative experiences involving Dell. We have an umpteen $thousand a year service contract on a $10k server, and it still sometimes locks up during a reset, and they still don't know why.

Well, the last 2 Desktops have been my own built ones. The laptop my family recently got is a Dell, rock solid for the most part. Gateway I have had mixed feelings about. My family and my grandparents each bought Gateway computers at the same time in June 1999, and my grandparents' (a Celeron 400 with i810e) has not given them any real trouble, and is running Win XP Home fine. The gateway my family had well, it gave us a ton of trouble. Truth is, I don't think it's anything Gateway did, but rather the chipset (it was a AMD K6-2 475 with ALi Aladdin V). Anyways, I'm rambling on. Bottom line, my own pre-built are what I will prolly always do, but in terms of OEM's, Dell for sure.

I bought my home comp from CyberPower PC.com. Not only were there prices reasonable for name brand components, but assembly to my specs was done quickly and shipped immediately. I have not had 1 glitch in any program I've run on it. I am very satisfied.

At work we run a couple Compaqs and 1 Dell. I've not been on the Dell much, so no opinion of it, but the compaqs are fairly sound, but tend to slow down a lot when running mutliple programs (which is a must for us sometimes). I wouldn't own a Compaq at home.

I have had a Mac since 1990.

Right now, Beige G3 with both OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.1.5, and a Blueberry original iBook with OS 9.2.2.

At work (analyst) I don't have a choice: Windows 2000 with Office XP Pro and Access 2000.

--------

But my start in computers? Fortran IV on an IBM 360, college class 1968. I had long graduated from college before even handheld calculators were invented. Yeah, that makes me older than dirt. But I still smell nice for being such an old codger. :D

Hmm, I build my own computers, and prefer to run AMD processors, nVidia video, and whatever other component is best in its particular category at the moment... or can be had really inexpensively. Right now I have an Epox motherboard and a Western Digital HDD that have both served me impeccably.

I don't own a laptop, but probably will get one when I exit the poor university student phase of my life. Keeping a relatively up to date desktop is fund-consuming enough for me right now.

I build my own.

I love AMD Athlon chips.
And, I use nVidia video.
I also use Sound Blaster for sound.

By building my own, I can get the tower that I like. And, that's important to me.

I buy VIA motherboards. They're the best, in my opinion.

And, I can get the internal peripherals at a fabulous deal by buying separately.
