It was quite a while ago (about 1985), but a minister mentioned a book titled People Of The Lie by M. Scott Peck (who also wrote The Road Less Traveled) This book explores human evil from the perspective of a Chistian psychiatrist, using case studies and historical research. Dr. Peck describes evil in almost clinical terms, as an affliction victimizing people, causing them to masquerade as "good" and "perfect". He also makes a compelling case for demon possession, especially in cases of mental illness affecting godly people. I found it very helpful for recognizing and combating evil in others (and myself), while still treating its victims with tolerance and Christian love.
