Florida is going to need A LOT of construction workers to rebuild after Hurricane Ian......in a very tight labor market....consider:

Just before [Hurricane] Sandy hit, 900,000 construction workers were identified in government data as actively looking for work. In contrast, fewer than half as many construction workers, 401,000, August. According to Simonson, the unemployment rate in August was 3.9%; in August 2012, it was 11.3%.

Rebuilding Florida after Ian may be slowed by labor shortage

A certain party has obstructed every effort to reform legal immigration over the last 20 years. For both skilled and unskilled immigrants.

Both sides have done their very best on that front. Regardless under a Republican or a Democrat. They have always impeded the other efforts. As a non-American I can see it happen clearer without any bias towards one side or the other.

So it is not just a certain party it is both parties.

That may be true to a degree, but when it came to passing major immigration reform legislation in the Bush and Obama Administrations, it was the far Right that stopped it from passing.

Is picking crops the most dignified job we can offer these people? If they wish to go up north, to maybe New York where there are better jobs and higher pay, then why disparage them for signing the papers to get a free bus ride there?
No one is disparaging them for signing - they are condemning the players who gave them false papers to sign that will sabotage their claim to asylum. That was evil.

I don't understand, the "far right" was a minority in Congress, why do you consider it their fault?

Maybe my "far right" characterization was off base...you tell me why John Boehner's House of Representatives refused to even consider the bill that passed the Senate?

On June 27, 2013, the Senate took a historic and bipartisan step toward an immigration system that works for all. By an overwhelming margin of 68 to 32 votes, the Senate passed S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. That bill took a comprehensive approach to modernizing the U.S. immigration system, providing a tough but fair pathway to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants living in the country, updating the legal visa system for the 21st century, and making the largest and most expensive investments in border security to date. But the House of Representatives refused to consider it—or any other form of immigration reform—and S. 744 died a slow, painful death in the 113th Congress. In the 114th Congress, the only pieces of immigration legislation debated so far have been enforcement-only bills, a far cry from the holistic solutions offered by S. 744.

I can't tell you what happened back in 2013. You should understand the basic process. A lot of times something is inserted in a bill which is a point of contention, that does not mean that the Democrat or Republican who votes a certain way is against reform on the particular subject. You may recall Nancy Pelosi urging Democrats to vote for a bill and read what is in it later. Who knows what staff puts in a bill? Deals are made behind the scenes and most people have no idea how corrupt the process is. I worked on one particular resolution or bill where over two thirds of the House of Representatives were co-sponsors, and although Nancy Pelosi had stated that "all voices would be heard" she blocked a hearing in the Rules Committee and blocked a vote. I think every member of Congress who won't even read a bill before voting should be booted out of office, but the American people vote differently.

IOW, you won't answer the question. 2013 was not that long ago...

A bi-partisan group of Senators got it passed in the Senate. In the House, Tea Party Republicans were using "NO AMNESTY" as an excuse not to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Later, BUILD THE WALL became the political mantra...

The fact is, the Republican Party has been using illegal immigration as a political wedge issue. They have no motivation to solve it.

Why not? It was only 9 years ago - surely records and news articles exist?

You should understand the basic process. A lot of times something is inserted in a bill which is a point of contention, that does not mean that the Democrat or Republican who votes a certain way is against reform on the particular subject.
If they are truly interested in reform, the proper legislative response would be to propose changes to the Senate's bill or write a new version that does not include the point of contention. It happens all the time - the Senate passes one version of a bill, the House passes another, then they work together to combine the two into one that both can agree on, or just pick one and roll with it.

Simply refusing to consider the matter suggests that they were not actually interested in reform.

Hmm, we collectively should band together to choose which jobs are best for which people? Sounds like SOCIALISM! to me.

Was that a "yes"?

pathway to citizenship
Any bill that specifies that is not going to get support from the GOP simply because they believe people should not be rewarded for breaking the law......plus the fact that it simply encourages others to do the same hoping they too will get to jump to the head of the line. I agree with them. If someone came here illegally they need to be sent home and go through the proper procedures to get here......no exceptions.

They have every motivation to solve it: to allow only people in the country that have been properly vetted.

Yet, plenty of Republican senators understood that deporting over 11 million people who have established lives here after 10 or 20 + years is simply not realistic. It's even more of pipe dream than building a wall across a 2,000 mile border.

"....the Senate bill would have put the vast majority of the 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States on a 13-year pathway to citizenship. Anyone who entered the country prior to January 1, 2012, who passed a background check, had not committed a serious crime, and paid fees and a fine could apply to gain registered provisional immigrant, or RPI, status. This is the first step toward permanent residency. Once they gained RPI status, immigrants would be free from the constant worry that they or their family members could be picked up by police, detained, and deported at any time; they also would have the ability to work legally. After 10 years with RPI status, they could adjust to permanent residency and, three years later, become citizens. The bill also included accelerated pathways to citizenship for DREAMers—young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States prior to age 16—and agricultural workers."

Personally, I don't care. If you come here illegally as far as I am concerned you should be sent back without the opportunity to ever come here again.

How are we allowing human trafficking and drugs and death? We don't ship illegals here. They come here.
When people are accepting of the gaslighting we get from the Federal Government that the border is secure. That's how you allow those things. Congratulations! Your drank the Kool-Aid they served up. The Feds are allowing this.

It hasn't been a huge secret for years on end that this is going on. You see news stories all the time about drug busts, human trafficking rings that formulated from illegals, and deaths happening constantly at the border or while running to get to their next point of destination they have in mind. They all mention where it started (the border) in the reporting. I know you don't live under a rock. That isn't the definition of a secure border that the Feds are claiming.

They come here because there is some sort of draw that our Federal Government hasn't stopped, and since they are the arm of the government that SHOULD BE restricting these reasons? They will continue to come. They enable it to happen. When the Feds claim 'secure border', and yet you have border towns that get hundreds if not a thousand people a day that 'come here' as you say? Yes, they are allowing it. States don't have the power to stop it, but the Feds claim it is their job...so when do they start doing it effectively?

What are Florida and Texas doing to stop illegal immigration? Except telling them they're doing nothing wrong, and they could get better jobs in a different part of America. Then send them to a vacation island at the wrong time of year.

You do realize states have no power to STOP illegal immigration don't you? That's is the Fed's job to do. I guess by your comment you had no clue, but it is the truth. So, what is the Federal Government doing to stop illegal immigration? Claiming it has a secure border isn't doing anything. The Cities that are getting the overflow with the buses holding maybe 50 people should even know that.

The Federal Government is telling them (Illegal Immigrates) that they are doing nothing wrong according to your own statement. I mean we all know that the border isn't secure, and hasn't been for many administrations both GOP and DEM. No one should accept their gaslighting on this fact, but they do. Your own statements show you are!

The fact that Florida and Texas asked the people that crossed the border illegally if they want a ride to a different part of the country- we will give you ride since its cheaper than spending more of our resources to hold you here? I see it has a good way of showing the rest of the country HERE is our issue, and the Feds don't want to help! We all live in a time of high inflation, etc so everyone is stretched to the max. They can help - Sanctuary Cities - share the burden.

Since we have all seen these 'Sanctuary' places that literally claim they are doing nothing wrong by coming here, and how they support them? There should be nothing wrong with throwing them some overflow. The fact that a 'vacation island' only wants them seasonally? They are the hypocrites, because immigration isn't something that happens according to their 'seasonal' acceptance levels. It's a year round issue. It's very elitist to say we will take your illegals during our peak season to work, but we can't handle them now...so we are sending them to an military base instead. So, your 'wrong time of year' point of view? It doesn't work with the reality on the ground. Stop and think about that. Its the definition of elitist.

If the red states can take women rights away. And make voting harder. They can do more, when it comes to illegal immigrate. My bet is they don't care about illegal immigrates being there, since they are hard workers. And they only pretend to be outraged to get Conservative votes.

So can Democrats - do more! Who do you think has been having their resources being eaten up by the flow of 500+ daily individuals flowing into their towns? It's been those big meanies that 'take women's right away' and 'make voting harder' part the country.

Who are are the ones that get a busload of maybe 50 at a time daily (if that) and then ship them to military base because its the 'wrong time of the year' for them. lol or claim human crisis ONLY when it hits their sidewalks and resource bank account? Hello?! Sanctuary cities! The ones that should NOT BE OUTRAGED by the overflow! Funny how it was no big deal until it hit their front yard. They are Hypocrites.

This is a human issue. Not a conservative or democratic one. The drugs that flow into our country from the allegedly secure border? Kill both party supporters. Perverts from both parties enjoy the human trafficking. Everywhere these individuals that come here illegally get taken advantage of and abused, because they can be. Their illegal. That's not a political side either. It's just human evil. Wake up and smell the reality here. Both sides should be doing more compared to blaming the 'evil' other side. When do people realize this is a 'no duh' type of issue here?! The illegals and our country are both harmed by it. No political slant needed.

We moved to a rural community, and many of the farmers here use LEGAL seasonal immigration for their fields. They are required I think it is 2-3 months (min 2) to be in their country of origin (annually), but the rest of the year they are here. Most pick the Christmas season to go home. That's Federal law - not state. The people or companies that hire them have requirements of accommodations, food, healthcare, etc while they are here. Most have the same people annually come, and have been coming for 20+ years. No doubt Pelosi or others in power made those laws to protect them, and it shows how ignorant they are of their own protections they have already put in place...for those here to work.

I mean is she so dumb that she doesn't realize that her own state of California needs crop picking too? Where are the illegals suppose to go the rest of the year? I mean the vacation town - with their elitist's attitude only thinks their helpful seasonally too. How one sided can she be?

There is no such thing as a completely secure southern border. I've been hearing republicans cry for a secure border for last 20+ years, but to date, no one has been able to present a plan to secure it.

And you want to discuss enablement - start by examining what American businesses have been doing for several generations.....
