What is patriotism? Definition? Ideal example? Anecdote?

How does someone know they are a patriot?
It seems today it is usually a sense of dedication or pride or some such inspired by parents/ friends/ politics or finances (need a job - join the military ! ) ...
There's no ideal example, because usually it is sinful.
(almost always sinful)

Loyalty to one's country and its ideals of freedom and representative government.
So someone who is loyal to one's country and its ideals of dominance and autocracy is not a patriot?

Thought experiment: Can Chinese people be patriotic?
How is that an experiment ? Some of them are sinful and patriotic,
some of them are sinful and not patriotic,
and some of them follow Jesus and are not patriotic.

A growing form of idolatry to many.
I don't know if that's a fair statement to make. Many millions have died for their country. By all accounts, then, joining the military to protect and defend your country is idolatry.

So back to this. Is burning an American flag patriotic? It demonstrates your ideal of freedom.
Kind of an odd one, as burning the flag is the proper means of disposal. Burning a flag and leaving its remains in the street is unpatriotic, it is generally considered a symbol of hatred for a nation.

There are many different ideas of what patriotism is. In the U.S., you have the freedom to burn a flag if you want to. You have the freedom to kneel during the anthem. But how one feels about those moves may be different. One person can think that's a sign of disrespect towards the flag, while others use it as a form of protest.

So, patriotism might be a subject term.

Usually, yes, but not "all accounts"; only most of the time.
Someone rarely will obey YHWH, like Desmond Doss....
and be in the military ..... without committing pride or idolatry , etc ....

Hence, a thread about it...
