since becoming Orthodox, i have learned of many things that parallel each other in the scriptures. for example, Eve and Mary, Jonah being in the belly of the whale for 3 days - Christ being in the tomb for three days...
i was wondering if anyone knows of others. thanks very much in advance!

A quick look through the iconography and hymnography of the Orthodox church will reveal all sorts of parallels and types between the Old and New Testaments. The Holy Week hymnography is especially rich with this imagery. The three children in the furnace in Daniel prefigure Christ's Resurrection, as does the prophesy where the dead bones are brought back to life (I am sorry I forget the book). Jonah in the belly of the whale prefigures Christ's Resurrection, and the three wisemen bringing the gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrhh speak to Christ's kingship as well as his resurrection. I could go on for hours, but unfortunately I do not have the time right now...

The story of the burning bush prefigures Mary carrying God within her without being consumed by His presence.

The story of the snake-wrapped-around-the-pole-thingy-and-people-getting-healed-by-looking-at-it prefigures the Crucifixion.

Psalm 22 (which Jesus quoted on the cross) has lots of crucifixion imagery in it.

Isaiah 6 has imagery of the Holy Eucharist in it.

A lot of the similarities seem to be touched on in the liturgical texts of the choirs.

In the Pascha service we sang (more than once) "As Jonah came from the belly of the whale, like a bride leaving the chamber"
(obviously a parralel with the resurrection...the icon on my signature seems to show this quite well)

Or something along those lines.

It is really worth listening to the words of the choir. This can be quite difficult when the melodies are so beautiful.:)

I love the Orthodox church!

I also love the compare/contrast elements of the hymns also...was it Palm Sunday we sang of the woman who annointed Jesus as compared to the grasping of Judas? More conficting than a 40 minute sermon!

But this is off-topic...I write that a lot. :)

One of my favourite parts of the pre-Pascha service was when the choir sings for the first time "I shall arise".

I know I ought to put it into context.

It was so fun, we went really quiet and then bellowed it out!
Fabulous!

I love the Orthodox xhurch. :)

The one which is significant to us, concerns King David:
a.) David King of Israel; Jesus King of
Kings
b.) David, a shepherd of sheep; Jesus
the Chief Shepherd of our souls
c.) David, taken from among his brothers
to serve a king; Jesus left the
presence of the Trinity to serve
servants

The only other one which comes to mind at this time is about Adam, through whom "...all died." but through Christ we are all made alive.
Adam is the first of creation (that is of people); Jesus, raised from the dead, is the first born of many brethren.

I thought the whole idea of the fact that the New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament, is that the majority of the Old Testament has parallels and forshadowing of the new.

It does. The OT is so full of foreshadowment of the NT it would take us years to sit here and list each of the foreshadowments. It really is quite amazing.

Psalm 41 said:
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

41:1 Blessed is he who considers the poor.
Yahweh will deliver him in the day of evil.
41:2 Yahweh will preserve him, and keep him alive.
He shall be blessed on the earth,
and he will not surrender him to the will of his enemies.
41:3 Yahweh will sustain him on his sickbed,
and restore him from his bed of illness.
41:4 I said, “Yahweh, have mercy on me!
Heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
41:5 My enemies speak evil against me:
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
41:6 If he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood.
His heart gathers iniquity to itself.
When he goes abroad, he tells it.
41:7 All who hate me whisper together against me.
They imagine the worst for me.
41:8 “An evil disease,” they say, “has afflicted him.
Now that he lies he shall rise up no more.”
41:9 Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted,
who ate bread with me,
has lifted up his heel against me.
41:10 But you, Yahweh, have mercy on me, and raise me up,
that I may repay them.

41:11 By this I know that you delight in me,
because my enemy doesn’t triumph over me.
41:12 As for me, you uphold me in my integrity,
and set me in your presence forever.
41:13 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
from everlasting and to everlasting!
Amen and amen.

A prophesy of Judas' betrayal of Christ.
