DAY OF THE DEAD – DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, A Celebration of Lives

In front of her was a rather simple yet colorful altar complete with her husband’s pack of unfinished Marlboro’s, a can of his favorite Tecate beer, photos of his rugged mastached face, the ubiquitous orange marigolds, his small plastic comb, frayed photos of his parents with him as a child on a far-away ranch in Mexico, a plate of carne asada, votive candles, a glass of water, paper banners and brightly painted sugar skulls ghoulishly mixed into the display.

Day of the Dead Altars will be displayed Friday Nov. 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the former Ocotillo Shop next to the Fudge Factory. Mexican folk dancers will perform from the Elementary School and Miss Borrego, Dennise Cecena will sing. Special food items from Pablitos will be on sale and water will be available.

(1) The article is from November of 2018.

(2) What's wrong with a public school celebrating the Day of the Dead?

(3) Public schools celebrate different holidays, so celebrating the Day of the Dead is no big deal.

I'm not sure why some Christians fuss and complain about pagan/non-Christian holidays when some of the rituals and practices they participate in during the Christmas holiday have pagan origins.

You probably missed the part regarding tax payers dollars?
Understandable.
They don't put up Christmas trees in classrooms anymore do they?
But, this is ok -- right?

If you don't live there and didn't send your children or grandchildren to that school, why would you need to get worked up about it?

Yes, it's okay. It's okay for a public school to celebrate the Day of the Dead or put up Christmas trees to celebrate Christmas. It's also okay for a public school administration to decide which holidays will be celebrated within the school. That is the prerogative of an individual school district. And as far as using tax payers dollars, public school districts are already funded by tax payer dollars through local government, state government and the federal government. It doesn't make sense to whine about tax dollars being used to observe this holiday when tax dollars are already being used to fund the school.

Well we visit there often (for over 50 years) and my wife was offered a teaching job once at their elementary school. Good thing she didn't take it because, she would not participate in the celebration of this one.

Well Bob how do you think the taxpaying folks who don't celebrate Christmas or Easter feel about them being celebrating at public schools? Many accept it on account of how both have become so secularized that their kids enjoy them too. Which brings to the other point, does your wife object to the pagan elements of Christmas & Easter????

Also you know that the Day of the Dead has been long celebrated in many cultures, so that it too has become secularized in many ways. My best buddy is from El Paso. Both it & Halloween are routinely enjoyed at schools there.

The only thing I don't like about holiday's about the dead is when the loved ones try to communicate with the dead. The Bible says that talking to the dead is sorcery, and you won't even reach the person you are trying to talk to.

So what, Bob?

I think the underlining factor of the complaint is the Day of the Dead isn't a evangelical/conservative sanctioned holiday and therefore it shouldn't be celebrated by children in public schools or perhaps not celebrated anywhere else for that matter. I have encountered many of these Christians over the years who strongly discouraged any recognition of non-Christian holidays and even cultural diversity.

This website describes that the dead come back for a visit with their loved ones... pure evil.
Day of the Dead Customs and Traditions
Elaborate home altars, called ofrenda’s, are traditionally made to honor those departed spirits who have come back home for a brief visit.

With all due respect, if you don't like the Day of the Dead, then don't celebrate it. I don't like using a Christmas tree, but I don't go around complaining to other people who do like the Christmas tree or if a public schools puts up a Christmas tree to celebrate Christmas. I don't think it's my business to tell other people how they should celebrate the Christmas holiday or any other holiday for that matter.

The fact is, Christians have been slapping a Christian label on pagan holidays/pagan beliefs/pagan rituals for centuries, so it's a bit disingenuous to complain about a Day of the Dead celebration at a public school. Christmas and Easter have pagan origins with a Christian label slapped on them.

Well "religious freedom" is a code word for evangelical/conservative-only. All other religious beliefs should be banned and their practitioners stoned and/or put to death unless they convert.

No, we as Christians don't like to put people to death for their religious views. But the few Christians that did put people to death are the minority.

I wasn't speaking of Christians in general though.

Well, when they pass laws protecting religion in schools they can't restrict it to Christians.

"Religious freedom for me, but none for thee!" seems to be a common belief among many right wing Christians. Remember when all those conservative Christians threw a fit about the Satan statutes?
