First you should be a baptist.
Second you should be ordained by your local church.
There is no third. That said I wouldn't trust the added value of the exegesis of someone without at-least a masters degree that included reading biblical Hebrew/ Koine Greek

How does it work? What steps should be taken by the one seeking ordination?
Here is your heading. "Ordination in the SBC Questions"

First you need to understand that the SBC is an organization and not a church. The SBC, "Sothern Baptist Convention," is nothing but a very large organization where churches sign up to become part of so as to send out missionaries through collective funds that they send to the SBC.

So as to your question there is no such thing as being ordained to the SBC as it is not a church.

However ordination in churches that belong to the SBC differs from church to church as each church is independent and no one tells them what or how to do things except what they want to do or what they think the bible tells them to do.

So what is the reason for wanting to be ordained?

Thanks for the responses.

I am currently working on my masters degree and have worked in the Assemblies of God for some time now. I love the AG but doctrinally their are some differences between them and I. After reading the Baptist Faith and Message article on sbc.net and casually speaking to some ministers currently in the SBC I'm spending some time evaluating the SBC and seeing if it may be the best fit for me. I would like to plant a church either while I'm completing my masters or right when I finish. I kind of feel out of the loop (as is to be expected) b/c I've worked in the AG for so long I don't really understand in detail how to go about things in the SBC. Do you guys know how joining the SBC as a church body would work or what needs to be done to plant a sb church?

Most likely you would first have to find a church that is a member in the SBC. Then after attending you could ask for membership for yourself in that church. I suggest that you spend some time with the pastor before this and explain your situation. Depending on the parctice of that church they would most likely expect you to be re-baptzed to become a member.

Then after you attend for a time perhaps a year minimum you could approach the pastor and ask about ordination although it is not secessary to start a church. It would be up to your pastor of your new church if he was willing to present you for ordination or not and it would most likely depend on questions he asked you and the answers you give. depending on the church and Pastor it could take a few months to several years to get ordained if they agree at all.

Then how does a church gain affiliation with the SBC?

Brother - since you are so interested in the SBC - I highly recommend you check out www.sbts.edu. There is a ton of good stuff at the resources tab there - and I highly recommend you read the blogs that are linked there. Particulalry Al Mohler's and Russell Moore's. I love that website - and have learned so much just from using the resources they provide.

By saying you are affiliated, sending a representative to the meetings, accepting an SBC SOF and um... having people that want to meetup on Sundays?

I think you have to have baptist in the name of the church... not sure, this was a controversy sometime ago.

the SBC, again, doesn't own any churches. The church's are autonomous and the congregation could choose to leave SBC any time they want and simply become a "bible" or "community" church.

That said, The church planting I've seen has been done under the wing of another church that helped pay the start-up fees and ongoing costs until the church could fly on its own.
