Reply #1: οικουμενη (oi-kou-MEN-ay — the latter syllable of which rhymes with ‘day’) is the present feminine passive participle of the verb οικεω (oi-KEH-oh), the transitive sense of which is ‘live’, ‘dwell’. In 1 Timothy 6:16 the verb is used in an intransitive sense meaning ‘live in’.
There is no single English word that includes the entire semantic range of οικουμενη , which includes the following per BDAG:

#1. While the definition(s) of a word are important, so too are any adjectives connected to it and the context(s) in which they are used; especially when the noun can have more than one meaning.
#2. Had you bothered to check and compare similar passages in the other Gospels, you would have noted that Matthew 4:8 (compare with Luke 4:5 ) uses the word "kosmos". (Mounce Reverse-Interlinear New Testament)
Given the practically mirrored similarities between Matthew 4:8 and Luke 4:5, its not a valid argument for establishing that "oikoumene" by itself specifically refers to the known Roman lands. While oikoumene can be used in this fashion, Scripture indicates it can have a broader meaning, which is dependent on the context.
