Am looking for advice from christians who have read Hugh Ross' book 'Improbable Planet' and christians who hold Genesis 1 as literal days.

Should I read this book? I thought it was a book about how fine tuned the universe is but it is a book by someone who holds the belief that our universe came into being in billions of years. I was pretty disappointed when I started reading :s i just bought it today. I also just came back from a 'Answer in Genesis' talk which reconfirmed creation in 6 literal days.

Could this book be of any value at all for someone that believes in the words that in six days the earth was created?

Also, if I discard of the book should I sell it or just get rid of it? I don't really want to sell it to someone and perpetuate something that is not true to the word of God :s so disappointed...

    Probably not.
    1. If you can take the hit, discarding it would take it out of circulation.
    2. If you can't take the hit, returning it to the store for a refund would still absolve you of any guilt.
    3. If you can't return it, I would still go Acts of the Apostles 19:19.

There is no defined teaching within Christianity regarding the age of the earth. You are free to hold whatever belief or opinion you choose to hold.

Why not just study it and make your own mind up?

I've read some of Hugh Ross's stuff. He comes across as a very intelligent scientist and a strong Christian. You may get a different perspective from reading it. However, if you refuse to read it, I'll be glad to take it off your hands :). Send me a PM and I'll reply with my mailing address.

Oh well, I thought I'd try. I do hope you at least skim the book, though. He's a very smart guy!

Ross tries to marry naturalistic theories with theistic ideas.

@JesusYeshuaisLord I agree with the above too. I believe in a young Earth and a 6 day creation. But my salvation doesn't hinge on it and what if Genesis is allegorical? I don't believe it, but can I say with 100% certainty that I am correct? No, it is what I believe, I even think I can give a good scientific answer for certain things that cause issues with people who end up see Genesis as allegorical... but I can't say with 100% certainty.

Thus my point is.... trust God. This isn't a salvation issue, and as God has led you to where you are today, so too will He lead others as He sees fit on this issue. So, burn it, return it, sell it for 3X the money and go have a steak diner... I don't think it matters. :)

I just i am undecided about this, because what about the stars? Light that traveled only for 5000 years of distant stars that are millions of light years away can reach us now? Either God 'cheated' or science is upside down somehow or i don't know!

I tend to believe the universe is old though.

You should read the book, he is a christian.

When God created trees bearing fruit they had to have food for Adam to eat. Therefore, they were not seeds nor saplings but trees old enough to support fruit... even when they were days old. Those trees had the appearance of age. Same with Adam, he was made a man, not a baby in need of milk. When Adam was 2 minutes old, he probably looked 25. Again, the appearance of age. So, if these things can be true, then God placing the stars where they are and allowing the light of them to be seen from Earth immediately is also possible and gives the appearance of age.

The old earth/young earth issue is an unfortunate divider among some Christians.

My question is, “Does it matter?”

None of us were here back then and believing that the word “day” may have a different meaning than what some people presume in no way dilutes or takes away from the message of the Bible.

My faith has been strengthened, not weakened, when creation and science are reconciled.

Old earth, young earth, who cares? Believe what you want on this issue. Our job is to be like Jesus and spread his word. It’s definitely not to get others to believe in inconsequential interpretations that do not directly affect salvation.

That's it right there... no video of the event on YouTube, nobody but God and the angels saw it happen. So we believe or don't believe what we want on this one, and not get all dogmatic about it, it isn't a salvation issue at all.

I.m.o. the historical accuracy of the Bible is important.
If it all didn't happen, what are the stories worth?
So after doing my 'research' (actually learning about other people's research) i believe the Bible is a history book from Genesis 6 onwards. It's not a timeline without gaps and problems though.
Not 100% sure the flood was global, although there's a strong case for Genesis 10 genealogy accuracy.
It seems to cover all peoples on earth.
Naturalistic science can't reconcile with a supernatural history.

You do know that you are bound for Hell, don't you, if you do not believe Genesis was exactly 1,584 hours? :swoon: (Posted only to show the silliness of making something like this of any importance. God never said we were saved by believing timeframes.)

To convince someone who holds to an old earth scenario you're going to have to find out why they believe what they believe, what facts they base their belief on and then find a more convincing argument for such facts from a young earth scenario.

My biggest problem with OEC is that it offers no viable explanation for Original Sin (to the point that it denies its existence). There are lesser logical objections, too, but I don't want to derail this thread further.

    Hello brother JesusYeshuaisLord

I would suggest throwing it away and instead study God's WORD on the subject prayerfully asking JESUS for God's SPIRIT to be your guide. This is the NEW COVENANT promise for all those who believe and follow God's WORD *HEBREWS 8:11; JOHN 14:26; 16:13; JOHN 7:17. Turning to the teachings and traditions of men can lead you away from the truth of God's WORD. Only God's WORD is true and we should believe and follow it.

    God bless.
