Because Obama spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money flying to Detroit for a day to inform the nation of how wonderful his bail-out of GM has been for us all. Nothing else was on his schedule Friday. Nothing on the war (July has been the bloodiest month yet), nothing on the oil spill, nothing on the real economy (the one which doesn't depend on handouts from Obama). Not his first PR stunt involving his donors in the UAW and his bailout either. Earlier this month he flew out to a factory which makes batteries for the Volt and gave...well..about the same spiel he gave yesterday.

The Volt is Obama's personal marquee now. Let's see how well people like it.

A battery operated car doesn't work as well as a gas fuelled car. Thats what happens when the government decides what technology to use in stead of letting the market decide. When Obama starts being driven around in an electic car I might think about buying one.

FallenPaladin, you couldn't be more wrong. The free market is bringing electric cars for sale because there is a demand for it. Chevy has the Volt (which is not an electric car, it is essentially a plug-in hybrid which does have a gasoline engine), Nissan has the all-electric leaf, Ford will soon have an electric Focus.

That's a very interesting theory. The obsession is certainly there.

He's flying to Chicago this week to give another speech, this time at a Ford plant, touting how he helped the auto industry recover (mostly likely he'll promote the Ford Fusion as he has promoted the Volt...his administration has poured over $150 million of stimulus money into the Korean owned factory which builds the batteries).

Flies into Chicago Wednesday to celebrate his birthday. Then, on Thursday, gives the one speech, attends 3 fundraisers and flies back to D.C. While that is going on, Michelle Obama will be, at taxpayer expense, at a five star resort on the Spanish coast.

Why does this news story exist?

Because the President made a point to drive the car, and say how great it was, from his extended drive of this vehicle.

If you want to show the people how great something is, drive it a little more then 2 car lengths.

Photo ops, nothing but fluff. The president got in an alternate fuel vehicle and moved it forward five steps forward. Do what he says, not what he does. Drive a volt for life, not just 10 feet.
