having lived under the Heathrow flightpath for most of my life, and spending holidays underneath RAF low flying exercises, I really don't see what the problem is.

Aparently, the NYPD was told about this, but Loius Caldera, the director of the White House Military Office, forbade them from actually telling the public. Why, I'm sure I cannot imagine, though if I were forced to hazard a guess I'd say "being stupid".

Yeah, somebody was asleep at the switch when it came to letting the public know. I mean, they could have ran a news story on it a few days in advance saying, "Hey, Air Force One is going to be flying around New York so they can get fancy new pictures of it. It'll have an F-16 escort, so if you see those 2 together, that's what's going on." Granted, some people would still flip out when it actually happened, thus bringing into focus the question of "Why are you using New York for this photo shoot?" but they likely didn't get that far ahead in their planning stages.

Beyond stupid and shortsighted, but I don't think it fair to lay it on the president. Looks more like a snafu of idiotic proportions somewhere down the chain of command. I guess the buck stops at the top and I would bet Bush would have been crucified if it were him, but I doubt Obama even knew about it beforehand.

I'm pretty sure Obama knew. It's not like taking out Air Force 1 is like taking out the motorcycle for a little spin. If I'm not mistaken I think it requires a presidential signature to move the aircraft, although it could be the WH Military's director's job to sign off on it. I think this has exposed Robert Gibbs more than Obama, I don't see how anybody can fault the Bush administration for bumbling the English language after seeing that dolt up on stage.

Looks like you'd be correct. From the NY times

The OP is obviously trying as much as possible to tie this to Obama personally.
