OAS chief offers to resign in exchange for Venezuela’s ‘freedom’

In a video posted on Twitter and the OAS website, Secretary General Luis Almagro continued his harsh denunciation of the socialist country and said international silence on the issue was dangerous.

“Silence allowed the rise of Hitler and the genocide in Rwanda,” he said.

Bi-monthly update on the collapse of Venezuela.

God have mercy, praying for this courageous man and all of Venezuela.

This is interesting because Mr Amalgro in his native Uruguay somewhat made a career of complaining against the United States and against his jailors as supposed US acolytes; and the Uruguayan government of which he formed a part until some years ago had good and close relations with the Chavista government of Venezuela.

Now, regarding Latin American governments, to adopt a profile of saying, in effect: "Mr Trump and I think..." would involve a rather significant metamorphosis on his part.

PS: The previous OAS chief had a record of publicly telling sovereign governments what to do. For example, when the courts in Honduras removed the President for cause, he went around calling it a coup and calling for the former President's reinstatement. (This would be a little like the OAS going about telling the United States in 1974 to reinstate Mr Nixon.)

I'm not sure how much attention the Venezuelan authorities are likely to pay to the latest pronouncement from the OAS.

Secretary General Luis Almagro ... said international silence on the issue was dangerous.

Would that Maduro himself would resign for the freedom of Venezuela. But thugs are never interested in doing that. It would be a step forward if the press in the West would give proper coverage to how socialism has destroyed what should be a thriving, oil-rich nation, and if universities would also honestly explore how socialism, which so many here think they want for us, has never worked in any nation. That would help not only Venezuela, but us as well.

Umm...from a North American point of view, if it could also be suggested that Canada is a somewhat more stable trading partner than Venezuela, then in terms of energy security oil pipelines from Canada make a lot more sense than reliance on a host of volatile factors in Venezuela and the Middle East.

Absolutely, not to mention from a US point of view, developing our own abundant supplies. But I fail to see what this has to do with the subject.

I suppose your point about discussions of socialism in US universities is not directly related, ether; but it and the point I was trying to make from up here in Canada are probably part of the wider background.

My earlier point also tried to draw attention to ironies in Mr Amalgro's and the OAS's stances in the light of their track records.

I believe it was. According to OP, Amalgro "continued his harsh denunciation of the socialist country and said international silence on the issue was dangerous." It was to that silence that I spoke.

I'm not sure what he means about international silence; there has been a huge amount of publicity, at least, in Latin American circles.
