NYC Mayor de Blasio would lose authority over NYPD under state AG’s plan: report

Quotes from link:

Recent protests in New York City have shaken the public’s faith in the city’s police department to the point where Mayor Bill de Blasio should no longer have authority in law enforcement matters, New York’s state attorney general said Wednesday.

In June, Cuomo blasted de Blasio’s handling of the rioting in the city, calling it a “disgrace” and threatening to “displace” the mayor at some point, if necessary.

This in the middle of the largest exodus of police officers:

Quote from the link:

New York’s Finest are putting in for retirement faster than the NYPD can handle — while citing a lack of respect and the loss of overtime pay, The Post has learned.

A surge of city cops filing papers during the past week more than quadrupled last year’s number — as the city grapples with a surge of shootings — and the stampede caused a bottleneck that’s forcing others to delay putting in their papers, officials and sources said.

The NYPD said Wednesday that 179 cops filed for retirement between June 29 and Monday, an astounding 411 percent increase over the 35 who filed during the same period in 2019.

And the sudden surge in violence and criminal activity:

New York City shootings increased 130% in June compared to last year

NYPD Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for June 2020

Quote from link:
For the month of June 2020, the number of people victimized by gun violence and murder in New York City spiked significantly, when compared to the same period in 2019. Between June 1 and June 30, there was a 130% increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city (205 v. 89) as the number of shootings rose in every borough of New York. The number of people murdered citywide increased to 39 v. 30, (+ 30%) for the month, while the number of burglaries increased to 1,783 v. 817 (+118%) and the number of auto thefts increased to 696 v. 462 (+51%) citywide.

Letitia James is a very strong AG, and I predict she has a bigger future in politics. I am surprised that she isn't one of the women on Biden's potential VP list.

She has gone after Trump, his company, and his foundation with both barrels--and she has as much evidence as he is unable to hide to back it off.

I think that the idea of an independent panel is a good one.

NYC officers leave for two reasons: 1) the nearby suburbs have higher salaries and less danger; and 2) the 20 year half pay pension. A police officer or firefighter who starts at age 20 can retire at 40--but that is true for uniformed forces throughout the state.

That's the actual report. Mind you the so called "plan" is a series of recommendations. That being said, the Mayor of NYC has very little power over NYPD to begin with. The Mayor's power start and end with appointing or removing the Commissioner, which btw can already be removed by the Governor as well. This commission, which is partially appointed by the Mayor, would actually be able to exercise more power then the Mayor currently can. As a whole I agree with most of these recommendations.
