North Korea was under control when Obama was in office. Right?

North Korea issues nuclear warning to U.S., other foes - CNN

September 9, 2015

In its latest bout of saber rattling, North Korea says it is ready to use nuclear weapons against the United States and other foes if they pursue "their reckless hostile policy" toward Kim Jong Un's regime.

In a statement carried by the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday, an atomic energy official said Pyongyang is improving its nuclear weapons arsenal "in quality and quantity."
L. TODD WOOD: North Korea threatens U.S. nuclear attack

Before the ink is even dry on President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, the subject of the last nuclear agreement conducted with a rogue state by Democratic President Bill Clinton in the ‘90s, the North Korean Dear Leader, Kim Jong-un, has just threatened to nuke the United States.

In addition, the Associated Press reports that the director of the North’s Atomic Energy Institute said the country was ready to counter any U.S. hostility with “nuclear weapons any time,” and said scientists had “made innovations day by day” to “guarantee the reliability of the nuclear deterrent … as required by the prevailing situation.”

How about 2014?

N Korea threatens war over US movie

North Korea has promised "merciless" retaliation if a forthcoming Hollywood movie about killing Kim Jong-un is released, say agencies.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said in state media that the movie's release would be an "act of war".

He did not mention the title, but a Hollywood movie called The Interview with a similar plot is due in October.

How about 2013?

North Korea’s military ratcheted up its threat to carry out a nuclear strike on the U.S. to new heights Thursday — just hours after the Pentagon announced the deployment of an American ballistic missile defense system to Guam.

Claiming that the “moment of explosion is approaching fast” and that war could break out “today or tomorrow,” the General Staff of North Korea’s military claimed in a statement to the nation’s official government-run news agency that it has final approval to carry out “merciless” strikes on the United States.

The statement appeared to come in response to Washington’s decision to enhance U.S. military assets in the region and to the Obama administration’s own ramping up of rhetoric toward North Korea in recent days.

How about 2012?
North Korea has threatened a U.S. attack for years. Why aren’t you scared?

I response, North Korean officials have leveled serious threats against the United States. RT reports that a spokesman for North Korea’s National Defense Commission warned that it had weapons "unknown to the world" that made it an "invincible power," while the state news agency KCNA warned that "if [the] United States wants their mainland to be safe" they should end the military exercises

It is travesty and always has been. We know the current and previous regimes of North Korea want - surprisingly -to survive so they are not going to start anything because they would get wiped out.

What is different this time is that Trump is taking this yapping seriously and is yapping back instead ignoring the megalomaniac boasts.

But he doesn't have any new strategies to solve the situation. Same dilemma as always - one that Trump naturally said he could deal with before he became POTUS.

Sanctions don't do much without China and China does not want NK to collapse so that is a wash.

Military option would leave incredible collateral damage on Korean Peninsula and neighborhood so no sane Presidents have felt that rude talk was worth sacrificing few hundred thousand or few million civilians to stroke their ego.

This time that might not hold true anymore because we know how little Trump likes to look indecisive, or even worse beaten by the Rocket Man.

I don't see him losing too much sleep from the thought of Soul in flames if it gets him to look like he did The Right Thing in Fox News.

As North Korea threatens, U.S., South Korea to start drills - CNN.com

North Korea's military said Sunday it would retaliate with "an all-out offensive to put an end to the U.S. imperialists' military occupation of South Korea." The military also said the world will see actions "engulfing Seoul in a sea of flames, smashing every move for confrontation." The North often issues such warnings before military drills, but tensions are higher after November's shelling and the March sinking of the South Korean warship, Cheonan, which the South blames on the North.]

North Korea threatens 'nuclear war' over troop exercises

North Korea has threatened to use its "nuclear deterrent" in response to planned military exercises by the US and South Korea this weekend.

The regime promised a "retaliatory sacred war" amid increased tensions on the Korean peninsula over the March sinking of a South Korean navy vessel, which Seoul and Washington blame on Pyongyang.

North Korea claims the missile it fired over Japan was the one it threatened Guam with

In latest test, North Korea detonates its most powerful nuclear device yet

There are two good reasons -

Obama basically ignored him for eight years, even though he threatened us every year of his administration. It didn't placate NK - it didn't slow them down - and it gave him time to perfect the nuclear bombs he has been threatening to use.

And the solution is to keep ignoring him?

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I know it isn't having a petulant child yelling insults.

Nor is it having a spineless coward ignoring him, or giving into his demands.

So, is insulting the President of the United States helpful to making my point.

I didn't think so.

Name calling reveals weakness in an argument, not strength.

Great, so we know that neither solution that's been put forth in the last decade has worked. Trump couldn't fix a straw if it were bent but I'm supposed to believe he's going to solve this delicate problem. No, he won't, and when he's finally not President anymore, the next person will have to try to figure out another solution.

Yes. Not like they have ever nuked cities.

There is a threshold on using nukes. There are nine nuclear powers around the world and even some pretty unstable powers like Pakistan have never used one.

What's one more?

These are the nations that have nuclear weapons or claim they do:

United States
United Kingdom
France
Pakistan
China
India
Russian Federation

and now North Korea.

North Korea is the ONLY one that has been threatening annihilation of other countries every year for the last two decades.

How large of a city and how many people need to be burnt to death before we do something?

So far there's only one country on the planet that has actually dropped a nuclear bomb on another nation. Care to hazard a guess which one?

Here's the thing with North Korea. As crazy as the guy may be, he knows that he launches one then his country will be utterly destroyed. So, yes, he threatens every year for the last two decades. But he also knows that if he were to actually do it, he'd be gone. So, cornering him into thinking he will be destroyed is counterproductive.

Yes, two decades with nothing happening and everyone well aware that only thing North Korea could arrange would be a messy suicide.

And only one country from that list has actually used nukes....

Also you forgot Israel from the list.

Frankly I don't know that this Rocketman is smart enough to think that far ahead.

(Shrugs) If he is so smart to know that if he actually did it hit something he would be gone? He is smart enough to read the threat that says - if you hit us or our allies you will gone too. That is what was said.

I have this feeling that if Rocket Man had to decide between his power and his life? He will still choose his power. That's what power mongers do.

NK has been shooting stuff off since almost the end of the war, and now claims they will switch to nukes. If people ignored that, and he used them? Leaders would get blamed too. If his rockets are as inaccurate as it has been reported? The threat he could actually hit something - even on accident - is very real.

If NK just wants something? Then let them place their big boy pants on and negotiate for it. You don't enable someone threatening you with nukes by ignoring them.

I'm waiting to see if China actually backs up its statement about not doing business with NK anymore. I'm speaking of the banking aspects they decided to do on their own after the UN speech.
