Non Traditional College Students

I'm in my early 30's and a single mom. Anyone else out there who is a non-traditional college student?

I'm 29 but otherwise like a traditional student 'cause I am single with no kids.

Do you find it difficult to "fit in" or "relate" to the 18-22 year olds?

 

[Wren]

Yeah, I do. They seem like to focus on things that just don't seem important to me. It's not that I feel like I'm better than them but partying (which seems important to a lot of the students) just isn't something I'm interested in.

I think it helps me though that I'm in a small state university so I'm not the only non-traditional student there are just a very small number of us at the university.

I'm at a private Christian college - so i feel outnumbered by the young folk, but there are married couples with some of them my age - - but I'm the only single mom here.

I'm not really familiar with private colleges (Christian or otherwise) but maybe there are some ways you can feel like you fit in.
I'm plan on joining some organizations (clubs) this fall like the College Democrats and the German Club for instance. I know that I'll never be one of them but at least I think I'll feel more a part of things.
I guess I'm kind of lucky because people are for the most part relaxed at my school so as while there may be some who act like I don't belong there, most are fine with me as long as they feel respected (and not thinking I'm better than them just because I'm older) by me.

It's funny when I think about my perspective from that age/phase until now... I am wondering how I will look back on these years in another 10 years too.

I'm a traditional college student (so I probably shouldn't be posting here...) at a small, private Christian university, and I've had classes with non-traditional students, and some of them became my friends. if I had the chance, I would gladly hang out more with non-traditional students

(sorry if that was kinda garbled...)

Actually, during the semester we have a "barnabas group" - and once a year we share our testimonies... The testimonies of people who are 18-22 have ministered to me as much as people who are my peers or older. I have nothing against 18-22 yr olds, I just feel out of place at times.

DH and I are nearing 27, and we are considering attending a small Christian college. I've taken some classes, and sometimes I have a harder time fitting in because of my age, but that isn't what it's about.

I was a bit dismayed when students found out I was only a year younger than one of our professors though. I had a hard time living it down.

I took a few classes when I was 26. It was some night classes in summer school though so a lot of the students were in their mid-20s.

I'm trying to go back to school for accounting, I'm curious how it will be!

I consider myself a non-traditional student because I started college at 15 . Now I'm married with a kid, so even though I am now the age of many other students, I'm at a different point in my life.

I moved out on my own a few days after I turned 18 instead of going to college like most of my peers did. I am now starting my junior year in college and I'm 24. Other than my age, though, I am single and have no kids.

I graduated being married and in my early 30s.

I enjoyed school much better as an older person, but I entirely did not fit in with the environment. And I was ok with that.

I got my BS from a small private Christian College off site and am starting my masters online at Liberty U...I love being non-traditional! It has a lot of bonuses and I'm 29 by the way...

lol I think it would be cool if someone got a job at a college as the undegraduate head honcho and insisted their title be changed to "Dean of BS."
