This is Nobel month. (Alfred Nobel was born in October.) The first prize announced is typically the Medicine/Physiology award. This year, it goes to 2 American and one British researcher who independently worked out the mechanisms by which cells respond to low oxygen levels. This has an important practical application. Many solid tumors, such as breast, colon, and pancreatic cancers grow in oxygen-deficient environments. If the way malignant cells adapt to such an environment can be blocked, it could be a new therapeutic weapon against some common cancers.
