This is Nobel Prize week. The Medicine/Physiology prize went to Svante Paabo. He’s a Swedish geneticist, now at the Max Planck Institute in Munich, who pretty much invented the field of human paleogenomics. Which is the study of how the present day human genome contains genes inherited from our ancient and now extinct hominin ancestors. In 2020, he also determined that certain variant genes on chromosome 3 was associated with a significantly higher risk of severe Covid illness. Very interesting, cutting edge work.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2022

This is a well deserved prize and in some ways remarkable as it is unshared -- a rarity in the science prizes of late.
