What is the big deal? He was introducing the team's starters, so it was pretty obvious "Gay" is a surname even if some people did not hear "Willy" before it.

FYI only one active NFL player is openly gay, and he does not play for Kansas City.

Not a big deal, just funny to me. I saw an announcer describe a black player as a "little monkey". That was a big deal.

When I was growing up, people described someone who was weak as "gay", though I never did. So when Troy Aikman said that one of the players not playing today was Willie Gay, that created a certain amount of cognitive dissonance in my mind.

Of course, Aikman wouldn't use gay as an insult today but it could have been taken that way by the usual suspects if he didn't use the player's full name. Similarly, the "little monkey" announcer didn't intend to insult, but that is the way many people took it.

Of course, your humor may be different from mine. Either way, no big deal.
