I'm sure you'd be able to arrange that from your cell somehow...

In the United States, home invasions exceed 1 million per year. Home invasions differ from break-in roberies, that usually happen when no one is home. Home invasions are calculated to occur when people are home, and are done to perpetrate violence, and terrorize the people at home.

Less than 10% of home owners are able to call law enforcement before being set upon for violence. Only about 50% of monitored home alarm systems will get a police response, for those that do the average response time exceeds 15 minutes.

50% of occupants will have a forcible felony perpetrated against them, this can range from assault, abduction, sexual battery, to murder.

40% of all sexual assaults in the United States occur during home invasions.

if you are not as well armed as the home invaders, your chances of making it through unscathed are decreased.

I read a story several years ago about a guy who's home was invaded by 13 thugs, he had an AR15 with a 30 round magazine, he cut eight down in the house, and several of the remaining five were wounded. The survivors went to the ER, and we're taken into custody.

It's a real threat, and if you are hoping that the cops will save you, you are mistaken.

It would suck to be you if 10,000 wasps saw you coming before you had a chance to use it!

So, then you DO favor letting civilians own heavy machine guns and mortars... perhaps even planting a minefield in their lawn to protect them from home invasion?... and if the neighbor kid stumbles on a mine when he goes to retrieve his overthrown frisbee?.. Too bad...just collateral damage, acceptable because, well ...freedom.

Is this the great that America has been made. I have crimsafe security doors, so I am not mindless, however it does seem strange that the answer many turn to when it comes to violence is more violence, and when it comes to guns is more guns. Our criminals do not need to be so well armed because our citizens are not so well armed, though I observed someone holding up s petrol station was felled with a large bunch of bananas.

There are videos from the Rodney King riots in LA where looters attacked retail shops and the apartments located above where the owner lived.

I wonder if those shop-owners would have preferred to defend themselves against a violent mass of criminals using an automatic weapon rather than a revolver...

Well, sorry that I assumed incorrectly. I think the screening process is a tough one for sure..
However, some may argue that it is those that avoid the proper protocol altogether, that are one of the largest threats.

What would you do? You have to shoot them before they shoot you.

What would you do, unarmed during a armed home invasion? Take one for the team?

I just have two razor-toothed dobermans in the back yard who just love children and police officers but hate anyone wearing a hoodie and a mask!

We're not talking about paper wasps. We have those here too. We have German wasps and they are the large ones. You might call them yellowbacks. I saw a mounted hornet in our local museum, and I would just hate to be confronted with 10,000 of them. They are big and nasty!!! You might need to have a .5 Browning heavy machine gun to keep them at bay!

I've been charged by a pig after missing my shot with a .44 carbine lever action.

Not a comfortable moment, I'll tell you.

Fortunately I was with other people who also had a bead on the pig.

You really think unarmed martial arts dance groups would have made a difference with a man intent on evil?

We have large wild pigs in our bush country, and the boars have sharp tusks and you wouldn't want to be in the way of them when they charge. When I was young, a family friend used to go pig hunting in the back country using dogs and a knife. Often, the dogs would be gored and he would have to take them to the vet to get them stitched up.

If guns are taken away from people, then will we not lose the right and ability to defend and protect ourselves?

Meh, I'm not sure about that though.

Like I said before - maybe if you were talking about simply "murder". I can't really cite statistics about the ratio of guns purchased legally vs. illegally when it comes to individual A shooting individual B in a random act of violence/homicide/etc.

But when you're talking about MASS murder - where someone walks into a place and offs 20-40-60 people...from what I know those people have pretty much all obtained their guns perfectly legally. Either walked into a walmart and bought their stuff - or took it from their folks who purchased it perfectly legally. I'm not really familiar with any cases where someone went out onto the black market and bought the gun they hosed a bunch of people with.

And that argument about how "it only effects those that obey the laws" has always seemed like a weird argument to me. It seems like people who lob that out there are saying "Well, if the black market is an option and they might find it out there, then might as well do nothing to screen them."

In other words, since it's a foregone conclusion that they might be able to find a way to get it anyway, might as well throw up your hands in defeat and grease the wheels for them to buy the guns legally and offer no impediment whatsoever.

To be honest - that strikes me as just wrong. Make them buy it on the black market. Let the batman shooters and the Adam Lanzas of the world have to work to get their guns. Let them pay black market prices. Let them have to figure all of that out. Don't just say "Well, can't do anything about it, so let them buy those firearms at Walmart".

At least that's my take on it.

Actually yes I am interested. I think it is very strange for the leader of the nation (no disrespect meant with Queen btw- lighten up!) to wear a scarf in 'solidarity' with muslims. She is not Muslim, or follows any religion as far as I know. I see another poster sees it as polite, which interests me. Making yourself look like a Maori to show solidarity with Parihaka, or wearing a piupiu on Waitangi day probably wouldn't go down as polite. Why is dressing up like a Muslim in an article of their religion different? I don't think I would feel 'validated' if muslims dressed up like Christians and wore crosses if the situation were reversed. I'd find it weird and patronizing maybe. I would like to see what other kiwis think, I've heard both in my workplace and wondered about Christians. So unless you have an opinion, please don't bother answering!
