MONTREAL — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada has long cast himself as a spokesman for the world’s liberals, standing up to President Trump, supporting women’s and Indigenous rights, welcoming immigrants and fighting climate change and racism.

But that calibrated image suffered a major blow this week when photos and a video emerged of the prime minister dressing up in blackface and brownface in the early 1990s and in 2001.

With Canadians heading to the polls on Oct. 21, the revelations have rocked Mr. Trudeau’s re-election campaign, reinforcing a narrative that has dogged him throughout his political career: that he isn’t really who he presents himself to be.

“Justin Trudeau has carefully crafted an image of what Canadians aspire to: hope, openness to the world and youth,” said Jean-Marc Léger, chief executive of Léger, a leading polling company in Montreal. “The blackface episode shatters that perfect image and casts questions on his authenticity.”

Hey I don’t make the value signaling rules the Left makes up. Now they have to live with it. But they are good at forgiving their most loved figures even if they are hypocrites.

It was an “Arabian Nights”-themed gala, and it was brown. Then he participated in a school talent show wearing blackface and an afro wig. Then a third in a video with him dancing in blackface.

No doubt his motive was not to degrade anyone, but people don't look to motive anymore. They always assume the worst, and you must be taken down. No doubt they could find someone of middle eastern descent to say they were offended and felt degraded by his brown makeup on the Arabian Night part too. That's how it is played today. Your assumption - with the value signalling rules redleghunter mentioned? Makes it impossible for that to be possible.

We live in a strange culture right now. Context, motive, etc makes no difference. If you do something they will be like dogs fighting for a scape of meat to tear you apart. They will be hypocrites if they don't do the same here sadly. If you have to virtual signal everything? You must be consistent. Otherwise, your just seen as mean spirited and of no substance.

I think it is dumb, but it is the atmosphere they have created for themselves - and claim to have created for the world.
