My fiance and I are talking about adopting a second cat after we are married!

I wanted to do it sooner (my roommate was going to get a kitten) but I heard it's not good to mix cats when they're younger than a year! Is this true?

Also if we do get a second cat, how do we pick a cat? (opposite sex? same sex? Older? younger?) and how do we introduce them to each other?

Thank you for your help

If you're thinking about getting a new cat, you can get one at any time. Make sure though that both your current cat & your new cat have received their vaccinations and are also FIV/FeLV tested. In my experience female cats do not do well with other females but male/male & female/male do ok. Both cats should be spayed/neutered to help prevent territorial issues. Depending on the age of your current cat, you could probably get a kitten. I wouldn't recommend a kitten if your current cat is older than 3-5 years, because the older cat would probably not tolerate a kittens playfulness. You can also get a cat the same age as your current one and I haven't had many problems with that. Just remember to introduce slowly. The best way in my experience is to quarantine the new cat into another bedroom, with the door shut. Your cat will be very curious about the new kitty and they may begin playing with each other under the door. After a couple of days, switch the cats out and let them adjust to the other cats smells. After that, you would allow the cats to play together, supervised of course. They may take to each other right away, which is great. However, they could also start hissing and swatting at each other. If that happens, you'll want to keep them seperated while you aren't home until they adjust to each other. This method is a huge pain though, and I've been lucky enough to have mycats get along well with other cats. I personally wouldn't use it unless there was a problem with hissing and swatting at the beginning.

To be honest, that's bs. That's science talk. Dagna do you not understand that GOD The almighty who has created these wonderful creatures, also takes care of them and watchs over them? My kittens is never gonna get fiv/felv or spayed or neutered or whatever, etc. God takes care of my cats, and he is the only option.

Behold: God is perfect in all his ways and there is none that is better then GOD, Down to the father who has made us in truth

Oh, so I can blame God for giving cats FeLV and causing those poor cats to die and suffer horribly? And I guess I can also blame him then for causing the rampant overpopulation of cats in my local shelter that puts down at least 15 cats a week, in a good week. Too bad I've been blaming all of that on irrisponsible pet owners when I really should have been blaming god. (And just one more reason I can hate this Christian god. He allows people to use him as scapegoat to avoid taking responsibility for anything)

Sorry Mrs. K, I won't be posting again because I'lljust end up derailing this thread. Being in cat rescue, and taking in FeLV & FIV+ kitties, I get a little sensitive about it. I wouldn't want youto go through what I did with my first two FeLV+ cats so I would still encourage testing. My first two were incredibly sick, were FeLV+ ( Iknew that when I got them) and died. One was just under a year old and the other was barely six months old. Their livers failed and both died within a week of each other and cost me well over $500 to try to make better. I would hate for your current kitty to have to suffer through something similar to that when a simple test could prevent a lot of heartbreak.

Edited to correct a few spelling errors

Like i said GOD Is the only one who can heal a creature. There was no medicine in the bible times / past times, and it shouldnt be none now. But see man thinks they can control anything, but they is wrong. And faith brings many good things for that person who really wanted. God is perfect and just like The messiah said: All things are possible with GOD.

Again, im not giving my cats no type of medicine. I dont take medicine, therefore my cats wont need to take none.

Science is a gift from God--> He gave it to us so that we, too, can solve problems here on earth. The problem of overpopulation (cats) is enormous. I can see a person trusting God and staying off of contraceptives but a cat is not like us. They don't pray to God to protect them... they don't go to Mass or what not and they aren't even "christian" (or whatever religion you belong to). They're just animals. That's it. God gave them to us for us to protect and look after. Not getting your cat it's shots and fixing it is completly cruel.

My female cat was horribly nerotic, scared and miserable before I got her spayed. Now she's relaxed and doesn't have to deal with out of control hormones.

Mulutka: Science is not from GOD and God did not give it to us to help us solve problems on earth. The Bible is the only, i repeat and heed it: The bible is the only way to solve the problems here on GOD's wonderful Foundation. Science is the way to man , and man can not understand the works of the almighty.

You mention that "not" getting your animals fix or shots is being cruel. So i guess in the past times , when Noah and moses, and Jesus christ and many other people in those did not get animals fix or shots or whatever, they was cruel to right?

Please, Jesus understood that God takes care of animals, Job understood that animals are taken care by GOD, etc, The bible is the truth, and GOD is the only way. Sounds to me, that you dont have alot of faith, Go thy way and seek after your creator, it's the only way to understand the suffering and rejoicing here on earth - u2k
