The New Jersey Legislature passed a bill granting legal recognition to same sex marriages making New Jersey the fourth state to provide for equal rights for gays and lesbians.

Gov. Jon Corzine said he would sign the measure

New Jersey lawmakers reject discrimination

To be fair, they didn't have much of a choice. The court ruling said that it is unconstitutional not to grant the benefits of marriage to committed gay couples and told the legislature to fix the law. So outside of a amendment to the state constitution, the didn't really have a choice. The amendmet was pretty much out of the question, so the real question would be whether it would be called marriage or civil unions.

And yay for CT, which did it all on it's own without any prompting from the court. Granted, the civil unions were approved to cut off a court case that was in the works where it was feared that the court would make the same decision as was made in MA. But still.

Let's look at this, the OP Claimed:

The New Jersey Legislature passed a bill granting legal recognition to same sex marriages

In reality:

Under pressure from New Jersey’s highest court to offer marriage or its equivalent to gay couples, the Legislature voted Thursday to make New Jersey the third state to allow civil unions.

I hate to break it to the OP, but NJ passed Civil Unions, not same-sex "marriages".

While I have not looked at the specific law, it seems that marriages and civil unions differ only in the name. Which would have legal ramifications on federal level, but not on a state level.

And in living memory it was illegal for people with different skin colors to marry….did the fact that polygamy is/was illegal magically justify discrimination against interracial couples?

Skin color and race are rather arbitrary things. Gender isn't.

I’ll ask you the same question strybullet ignored:
