James Webb: 'Fully focused' telescope beats expectations
James Webb: 'Fully focused' telescope beats expectations

"
The American space agency has achieved a major milestone
in its preparation of the new James Webb Space Telescope.

Engineers say they have now managed to fully focus the $10bn
observatory on a test star. The pin-sharp performance is even
better than hoped, they add."

“We’ve actually done very detailed analysis of the images we’re
getting, and, so far, what we’re finding is that the performance
is as good if not better than our most optimistic prediction.”
-

Synopsis | The Privileged Planet
For some reason our Earthly location is extraordinarily well suited
to allow us to peer into the heavens and discover its secrets."

It is Not Just Luck that man can create things to view the universe.
God clearly wanted us to make these cosmic discoveries. Romans 1:20
says, “Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature,
namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in
the things that have been made”

The heavens declare the glory of God more so everyday.

Mankind is unusually well positioned to decipher the cosmos from
this “Goldilocks planet” we call earth. The Hubble Space Telescope
gave us spectacular views of our expanding universe. What will this
new telescope reveal about the awesome universe God has made to see.

I used a website and it said the image of the star is probably fake.

I notice at the bottom of the picture it says
The test star has the ungainly name 2MASS J17554042+6551277.
A red filter optimises the visual contrast

They also say
But the agency cautions that a lot of work still lies ahead
before the telescope can be declared operational.

You're looking at a highly-compressed copy for the web. The original is here:
https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/...ignment-milestone-optics-working-successfully

That throws different messages that still say it's been edited in Photoshop, because... duh... It has been. James Webb is an infrared telescope, not a visible light telescope like (parts of) Hubble. Any photographs coming from the Webb will have had their color spectra shifted in order to make them visible to us. This is pretty common with space photography.

They shouldn't use software to do that because we cannot verify if an image is real or not. The reason I even checked it is because it looks like a fake picture. There is something very off about it.

It's a digital image. If not through software, how do you propose they perform this manipulation? Print it, color it in with markers, and scan it?

because we cannot verify if an image is real or not.

You can't verify if it's real or not anyways. At best, your website tells you if the file has been edited, not if it's an outright forgery. But we know this has been edited.

The reason I even checked it is because it looks like a fake picture. There is something very off about it.

What do you think a picture of a distant star is supposed to look like?

A physical lens can remove unwanted colors.

A physical lens can remove unwanted colors.

What?

First: no, a "lens" wouldn't remove unwanted colors. A filter would.
Second: they're not removing "unwanted colors." They're changing the colors entirely. There's a difference between filtering out one set of frequencies (and leaving others behind) and shifting the frequencies altogether. As has already been noted, the James Webb telescope operates in the infrared range - it's picking up heat that yours eyes can't physically see. If you tried to make a jpg out of this without doing any color manipulation, it would be all black.

To make an analogy to audio: filtering the low frequencies out of a piece of music would make it sound thin - kind of like a transistor radio. The lows would be gone, but everything else would remain intact. OTOH, shifting the pitch upward would make it sound like the chipmunks - in that case, nothing is intact.

Why not? At that distance, stars are point sources. Any star is going to be just a white-ish dot. The article explains how the satellite's mirror configuration causes that 6-pointed lens flare effect.

The science goals of James Webb Space Telescope,
that is around 1 million miles away from the Earth.
James Webb Space Telescope Science

"The James Webb Space Telescope will be a giant leap forward
in our quest to understand the Universe and our origins.

JWST will examine every phase of cosmic history: from the first
luminous glows after the Big Bang to the formation of galaxies,
stars, and planets to the evolution of our own solar system.

The science goals for the Webb can be grouped into four themes:

The End of the Dark Ages: First Light and Reionization -
JWST will be a powerful time machine with infrared vision that will
peer back over 13.5 billion years to see the first stars and galaxies
forming out of the darkness of the early universe.

Assembly of Galaxies - JWST's unprecedented infrared sensitivity will
help astronomers to compare the faintest, earliest galaxies to today's
grand spirals and ellipticals, helping us to understand how galaxies
assemble over billions of years.

The Birth of Stars and Protoplanetary Systems - JWST will be able to
see right through and into massive clouds of dust that are opaque to
visible-light observatories like Hubble, where stars and planetary
systems are being born.

Planetary Systems and the Origins of Life - JWST will tell us more
about the atmospheres of extrasolar planets, and perhaps even find
the building blocks of life elsewhere in the universe. In addition
to other planetary systems, JWST will also study objects within our
own Solar System.

Hi guys,

Well, I think it's really amazing technology. I can't wait to see the later pictures that we get of the galaxies and nebulae that have always been so awe inspiring from the Hubble telescope. These should just be sharper and more defined images. I agree with @Semper-Fi, the heavens declare to us the glory and majesty and power of the wonderful God we know. The God who created all that we behold in awe in the heavens, but loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die in our place for our sin. Thank you, Father.

God bless,
Ted
