I watched the cartoon in your first link regarding the "smart mark". If you watch beyond the first 50 seconds you'll see that the smart mark is something pushed by the bad guy to control the population and do his bidding. Something that is depicted as being from the bad guys can hardly be considered something that's being promoted.

It seems to me that cartoon is trying to make the idea look as creepy as possible.

And there's nothing new about this at all. It goes back to the 70s from my personal experience.

In other words I'm 60 and I've been in discussions about receiving the mark as a thing of technology since I was a teenager.

People have been looking out for the mark of the beast for a long time. I read that when social security numbers first became mandatory some believed that was the mark, especially because it assigned you a number that stayed with you for life. So I can see why they were scared. It's hard to imagine life before social security numbers now.
