From the "Topsy-turvy Lady Justice", files: In Trump-Nixon impeachment comparison, Pelosi raises specter of resignation

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is amplifying her unfavorable comparison of President Donald Trump to fellow Republican Richard Nixon, saying that disgraced president at least cared enough about the country to leave office before his impeachment.
...
The president has “every opportunity to present his case,” Pelosi told CBS, including coming before the intelligence panel.

“If the president has information that demonstrates his innocence in all of this, which we haven’t seen,” she said. “If he has information that is exculpatory - that means ex, taking away, culpable, blame - then we look forward to seeing it.

... and yet Pelosi dismisses GOP attempts at getting exculpatory information from the hearings into the public record.

The president is welcome to testify and give his account that exonerates him.

And the relevant people in his administration are welcome to testify... I suspect there is a reason Trump isn't offering to let them testify.

sure, but it is not on the president ( or any accused for that matter) to prove anything ( unless he is using an affirmative defense.

Correct. Any mis-statements, no matter how minor, would subject them to possible prison time.

So far the transcripts from the closed door hearings have been made public. I didn't hear the GOP attempt to enter anything from the closed door hearings that are exculpatory.
What did you hear?

Why would they make any misstatements? You could say that about any time you are testifying under oath. And that is ignoring that not testifying, when they have been subpoenaed, is more likely to subject them to possibly prison time.

Pelosi is being a politician.

She claimed they don't know what the grounds are to see if they can move forward to an impeachment, and not even sure they have grounds. So far I guess it is a 'just in case' inquiry over we don't know what yet. lol Yet it's worse than Nixon. What is worse than Nixon? She can't say.

The GOP should go forward in this in a bipartisan way, and adhere to their oath of office. In what? She isn't sure yet - they will let you know later. They just should.

Trump could clear this whole thing up by testifying to what they don't know yet, but in just case we need to move forward with impeachment stuff. I mean even he (Nixon) put the country first and left so they didn't have to impeach him. (eye rolls) At least he knew what the charges would be!

They really need to find someone else to interview on that Meet the Press show. This is getting more confusing by the minute.

Because people mis-speak.

It happens all the time. It's part of the human condition.

This isn't a trial but even if is was the defense needs to put up a defense if they have one.
A prosecutor in a trial doesn't go to trial thinking that the defendant is innocent, so the defendant better be prepared to present their exculpatory evidence or they are going to be convicted almost all the time.
So if the President wants to make sure he isn't impeached he needs to defend himself with evidence.
The GOP members are not his attorneys and frankly they don't know how to defend him because they are kept in the dark, too and he keeps do really bizarre things like smearing the witness in a tweet.

No, just like Sondland the witnesses are allowed to change their testimony if they recall something later on.
"I never had relations with that woman," was an out and out lie. They aren't out to throw innocent people in jail because they don't recall something or don't remember every detail correctly.
Remember they are a liberal bunch and not quite as picky as conservatives are.
So people need to come forward and tell the truth.

Should a prosecutor state the charges or announce a trial before all the witnesses a deposed and all physical evidence is gathered? Imo, that would be irresponsible seeing they don't have all the information yet.

Yes, that's how inquiries work - it is to find out information. If you had all the answers, you wouldn't need an inquiry.

lol Yet it's worse than Nixon. What is worse than Nixon? She can't say.
lololol - abuse of office lololol

In the inquiry, in examining the facts. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Trump could clear this whole thing up by testifying to what they don't know yet, but in just case we need to move forward with impeachment stuff. I mean even he (Nixon) put the country first and left so they didn't have to impeach him. (eye rolls) At least he knew what the charges would be!
Yes, after the impeachment inquiry - which lasted how long? - turned up the smoking gun.

They really need to find someone else to interview on that Meet the Press show. This is getting more confusing by the minute.
It's only confusing if you squint so as not to see where the evidence is going. If you have already determined in your mind that Donald did not, could not, break any laws, then the evidence that he has done so must be terribly confusing - cognitive dissonance.

Sure, but if he is claiming that he can prove it, then it might save him some stress if he would just do it.

but the state ( or whomever makes the accusation must prove them beyond a reasonable doubt and that means all of the elements of a particular crime if they fail to do so the person walks. If they do not do it properly by either not following the accused rights or by otherwise obtaining things illegally the person may appeal and will often walk ( even if they are guilty as sin. Legally, Trump does not have to prove a darn thing,

He hasn’t been charged with anything so there’s nothing for him to prove against yet but if he has any exculpatory evidence that would counter the mountain of damning evidence they’re getting from witnesses, he is always welcome to introduce it into the inquiry.

Ah, another case of guilty until proven innocent. You would think with all the attorneys in Washington someone would let madam speaker know she has it backwards
Guilty of what? What has he been charged with?
